I'm thinking about updating the head unit in the truck and got to thinking: I've seen the non-cd units out for a while, and I can't remember the last time I played a cd in the truck. All my music is on my phone. So... What's your opinion? Stay with the old school and CD it or trade to a USB port and aux jack?

I'm considering ditching the head unit all together. You don't really need one unless you use the tuner. If you have an iPhone, you can even install an Airplay unit from Apple and connect to the truck wirelessly. Pretty simple mod.

By the way, Mightlycarmods is one of my favorite auto shows currently. Tons of useful info.

In my daily driver I have a head unit with out a CD player. It has a couple gig of internal memory and all the latest technology hook ups. Best decision ever. In my truck I have a CD player but it will be changed out after the engine is running smoothly.

you could also run all the speakers to an amp, and then the headphone jack / rca cable to the amp. then just use your phone / ipod as your deck. thats what im going to do in a little while. 2 door speaks and a single sub, nice and simple.

I got a pioneer deck for like 140 bucks in 2008. Does cd, has front and rear aux input, has a rear iPod input, has cd changer and satellite radio control, and has front/rear/sub amp outputs. I listen to CDs all te time still buy like having all the ways to connect depending who lands in the passenger seat.

I roll with Sirius and my phone. I havent used a CD in a while and about 95% of the radio stations in my area suck.

I thought about that. I even have a small, Acer laptop I could use. Not sure how the components would stand to the jarring and vibrations though.
Back in highschool, when my deck was stolen I used the "walkman Mod" for a while. I used the rca's going to the amp with Radio Shack adapters to plug in my walkman and then a diskman. If I remember WAY back to the stone-age (early to mid 90's) it worked ok, but lacked control (base, treble, ect.) With today's phones and MP3 players It would probably work well.
I was thinking of something like this:

    RFX Source Units - RFX5000 - Rockford Fosgate®

It could be hidden behind the dash and used with the wired remote control. The actual radio slot in the truck would have a radio delete plate with one of these installed:

    RFX Source Units - RFX33SD - Rockford Fosgate®

For the inputs like phone and ipod ect. I'm not totally sold on the idea yet. just kicking around the idea.

I agree keep the cd! I love the iPod feature! It would be to just hook it up to an amp! Sometimes I do enjoy the radio mainly for traffic I've got a long commute! I found myself stuck in terrible traffic thanks to pandora!

IIRC the headunit you're referring to is called mech-less... Or mechless or something. It's pretty much all the processing and none of that [antiquated] CD crap. I remember a few years ago my friend had this pretty trick HU that accepted an iPod in cassette fashion. The faceplate popped off and you crammed that sucker in there. It was pretty cool.

Edit: Also I think there's something called the Parrot Asteroid Smart that might give ya a tickle.
