    I have a comparison question:

    I have a 1993 Toyota Hilux....
I am pretty handy with fabricating and carpentry.

I am going to make a ported enclosure with an 8" Subwoofer and these are my options and wanted your opinion between Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, JBL or perhaps Alpine

    Kicker 10C84. 8" Comp 200w 4 Ohm

    Rockford Fosgate P2D4-8 Punch P2 500w 4 Ohm

    JBL GTO804. 800w GTO Series 8" 4 Ohm

    Alpine SBR-S8-4 4 Ohm

    Any advice ?

When it comes down to it, the driver is only about 10% of the whole driver/enclosure combination.

The JBL had the best excursion numbers, but if you are looking for an 8", you can't beat Sundown's SA-8 is one of the best I've seen yet.

There's a # of factors you could look at when picking any of those woofers. There all gonna have there own sound, it's which sound is gonna best fit your taste in music. Of course woofers with a much larger surrond will have a greater excursion. Some woofers sound better ported while others sound better sealed. It's still an an 8" driver! And so on! I like the JBL and you can't beat the price on it, I considered using it on my build but I also liked the

    Cadence S2W8 or CLV8-5004
    SKAR Audio VVX-8 or MA-8
    Massive Audio Hippo 84
    Infinity Reference

I did like the specs on a few of the Sundown 8" that Litneon suggested! But to answer your question a short novel later I'd say JBL!

I have always used Infinity Kappa series and they are great.
I went to a shop that has done my installs in the past and they had this ported box Bass Case 8 from Phoenix Gold and the ported box design is identical to Alpine.

It is said that a ported case will produce a more powerful boom and the sub-woofer will have greater recoil spring back and forth.

The sealed box would have a profound low boom.

I am making the ported box following the diagram that Alpine and the Phoenix Gold website has.

What exactly is the difference between a "powerful boom" and a "profound low boom"? Are those technical terms?

The science of audio reproduction is just that, a science. 2nd order boxes are not better or boomier or more powerful than 4th order enclosures. Or visa versa for that matter...

Every driver is different. Every car install is different. A driver isn't really suited "better" for a specific type of music, enclosures on the other hand, can be. But the enclosure would have to be designed for that type of music.

You could have the best driver on the market, and installed in the wrong box in the wrong location in the car, it'll sound like poop.

The enclosure and install are 90% of the equation. Get a driver that you like, and go from there. The manufacturers recommended enclosure is usually a good place to start, but keep in mind, it was designed by someone that has a specific goal in mind - which may not be the same as yours.
I've designed tons of enclosures with my software that had 3 to 9 db better output than the manufacturers design could produce (every 3db is double the acoustic power). Theirs is not always the best design.

Bigger surrounds don't necessarily mean better excursion, the rest of the suspension has to be factored in too.

    Ok guys...

    Thanks Brudda and Litneon,

I appreciate the help i got from you both..

I looked over the links you sent me and the Sundown sub looked awesome and well put together.
I was near to buy the JBL but then after giving it much thought with regards to fabricating the enclosure and the time and money i opted to get something else which is the Alpine system that comes with the box already set up for $106.00 with Shipping included.
I was a bit limited on budget so I opted for this Alpine

It is used but the guy said it was in excellent condition plus he is here local in Miami FL

    ALPINE SBR-S8-4 8" TYPE-R PORTED SUB WOOFER
    SBR-S8-4 Type-R 8” (SWR-8D2, 4Ω) Enclosure System
Loud, Clean Bass That Fits Anywhere

The SBR-S8-4 8” Enclosed Subwoofer lets you add deep, accurate bass to your sound system without taking up much space in your vehicle.

    Type-R Technology

The SBR-S8-4 uses the same 8” subwoofer available in the Type-R component subwoofer lineup, so you get high excursion combined with high power handling. This advanced Type-R motor structure converts your amplifier’s output to low bass you can feel.
    More bass, less space

The SBR-S8-4 is compact and very shallow (only 11 1/2” wide x 19 1/4” long x 5 1/2” deep) allowing it to be mounted in virtually any vehicle. This compact subwoofer system works well under or behind the seat of a pickup truck, in a sedan trunk, or in the hatch of an SUV. /p>
    Tuned to rock

In order to play low with minimal power input requirements, the SBR-S8-4 is ported. A low tuning frequency combined with an efficient, large cross-section port allows the system to play down to the lowest octaves while still maintaining excellent control and power handling characteristics.

    Killer cosmetics

High-quality carpeting and sleek laminate combine to give the SBR-S8-4 great looks. A strong, attractive Type-R grille protects the woofer’s cone from damage, and the flush-mount spring-loaded terminals make connecting large-gauge wire a snap.
    Durable construction

Unlike many low-cost enclosures, the SBR-S8-4 is constructed from the best materials. High-quality MDF is used for all structural components, and it is internally braced to add stiffness and durability.

Introducing A New Level of Type-R Performance

These redesigned fifth-generation Type-R subwoofers include an abundance of enhanced features to achieve staggering power handing capabilities, cleaner output, deeper bass extension and ultra-responsive control than ever before.

Extreme bass fits in more places

The Type-R Subs have been completely redesigned again to offer more installation flexibility and application versatility to build the ideal sound system. At 4-1/2" for the 8", 5 - 7/8” for the 10”, and 6 - 3/8” for the 12”, these new designs offer a near 20% reduction in mounting depth, while offering even greater output capability.
    More Excursion = More Output

The new FEA-Optimized Motor Structure together with our revolutionary High-Amplitude Multi Roll (HAMR) Suspension Design gives the new Type-R Subwoofers the highest X-max and SPL output in the category.

With a real world, measured 21mm of X-max, allow the new Type-R Subwoofers to deliver the best-in-class bass output, ultra-low distortion, and unparalleled sound quality.
More Motor Force = More Control

Starting with a new ten piece, segmented magnet structure, the new Type-R subwoofer has over 20% more motor force than its predecessor delivering more accurate, louder and cleaner bass with even more control. This new magnet assembly is also an integral part of the next generation of Alpine’s Patented Radial Vented VC cooling system.
Keep it Cool = Keep it Playing

Alpine’s Patented Radial Vented VC Heatsink and Airflow Management System (US Patent #7,634,101) helps to minimize power compression and ensures reliable long playing time by actively eliminating output-robbing heat away from the Voice Coil. The new one-piece cast aluminum frame with integrated shorting sleeve uses the entire frame as a heatsink, to allow for sustained power output and handling, even in the most extreme of applications.

    FEA Optimized = Maximum Linearity

Alpine’s Patented Compound Radius Curve pole geometry ensure for an ultra symmetrical magnetic field, while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.
    Improved Power Handling

The oversized black anodized 40 mm voice coil offers more than 35% more surface area, allowing for increased power handling to 350W RMS / 1000W Peak. To get the best performance, we recommend you pair Type-R subs with Alpine’s new PDX digital amplifiers.
    4 Unique Alpine Technologies
    FEA Optimized HAMR Surround

The High-Amplitude Multi Roll Surround Design allows for extreme excursions without sacrificing valuable cone area. FEA Optimized for linearity and made with injection-molded Santoprene®, the HAMR surround is a key part of the suspension system that allows for extreme excursions with accurate, distortion-free control.
FEA Optimized Spider w/reinforced Layer Spider Integration

Ensures reliable and consistent control of the tinsel-leads to eliminate any possible mechanical noises or interference typical of many high-excursion designs.
Redial Vented VC Heat Sink & Airflow Management System

Actively manages voice coil temperatures by forcing air directly across the heatsink system.
FEA Optimized Machined CRC Motor Structure

Creates a symmetrical magnetic field while optimizing flux density to greatly reduce distortion, while further improving power handling and output.

I've owned a copy of BassBox Pro for 5 or 6 years. Done hundreds of designs and dozens of final installs.

My advice is always go as big as you can afford (within reason) on the wiring. That gives you plenty of choice to build up if you choose to and also insures theres sufficent power available for the hard hits.
One thing to keep in mind: With the price of copper being high, some of the lower quality wiring kits are using a copper coated aluminum wire. It sucks. Its stiff and it doesnt carry current anywhere near as well as copper. Go with a quality kit, prefferably one that uses high strand count wire. Usually called "welding wire". I recommend the Rockford Fosgate kits, but I'm sure there are ones just as good without "paying for the name".
    Hope that helps.

I have begun installing the amp and it seems pretty simple to do... Im a bit dissapointed with the Bullz 8 gauge amp kit that i bought because the power wire seemed like it was thick from the strand cover but when i checked out the actual stranded wire i was dissapointed. I am only running one 8" subwoofer so i guess i should be fine...

My question is where should i mount the amplifier... Under the seat or on the back wall of the cab ?

I would mount it on the back wall of the cab to ensure it gets good ventilation.
