So I'm kinda freaking out... Changed the water pump on my truck, after I was done it would crank but no start. I had unbolted the ignitor/coil from the bracket I made to change the brake booster at the same time as well. One of my buddies from work had an idea that the coil assembly might ground through its mounting bracket (made sense but there are individual grounds in the connectors for it) So I come home from work today and finish putting the radiator back in it and filling her up with 50/50. Bolted the coil bracket to the valve cover bolt used for the plug wire holdown bracket and try again... Crank...no start. My friend drives by as I am bolting the coil back up to the master cylinder bracket I had made and I pull a plug to check for spark with the boot attached and ground against the block (i also had unplugged both elec. connectors @ the coil and blown them out with compressed air and re- plugged in) She fires up faster than ever...??? Havent had an issue with starting since but what bothers me is that I couldn't find the culprit of the problem (connectors looked clean and good). Anyhow I changed the plugs after that to NGK Iridiums and found that it had BOSCH PLATINUM +2's in it ever since I BOUGHT IT!!!! ( thats roughly 4 years!)If anyone has ever used bosch plugs they know that they are a NIGHTMARE in a car designed for anything else... Needless to say the random sputter and rough idle I used to have are GONE.So problem solved but I dont know why because it started and ran with the old plugs in it... So I get on to the oil change right... I never met the 3k milage, but i wont tell you how many months it had been since I last changed the oil ... Drain the oil and go to pull off the oil filter and as I do it no oil comes out... So I pull it off and look at it and it looks BRAND NEW with FRESH OIL inside of it! Like none of the ancient oil I just drained ever went through it. So I figured " what if it was a bad new filter stuck in bypass mode??? But even if that was the case SOME of the black stuff should be in it right??? I have plenty of automotive knowledge, experience, and schooling and never heard of this So I called a friend who has had alot more field exp. than me and he was also baffled... So I'm hoping somebody on here might have some insight on this twighlight zone im stuck in... And keep in mind I've never had not 1 single issue with this truck. Runs great and has not given me a single problem ever in over 4 years. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
So to clarify, you put the ignition back similar to what it was before and runs. You swapped spark plugs and it runs better. But you found an oil filter that looks like it didn't filter? What brand filter is it, some are cheapier than others because of internal differences. Does it run now or is there still some random issue? I would make sure you didn't miss a plug somewhere, and check the fuses. I have popped them working on things i left the battery connected on.
Only thing that makes sense to me that would make that happen is a plugged oil gally, but Im sure that the oil from the pump hits the filter first, then travels throughtout the engine. Thats strange..(however I changed the oil on a f250 last wknd and failed to notice the old o-ring still on the block, slapped a new filter on, fired it up and watched 6.5 qts of oil pump in my driveway in ~10 secs flat.) But glad she's runnng smoother, Im assuming you completed the oil change, so Id pop the filter back off and see if its different...maybe after its ran for a minute so you could see if the oil was hot inside the filter...
That's my plan. Gonna drive it to work tomorrow and check it there. It runs great now, just the filter thing got me worried a bit cause its so strange. That sucks losing all that oil in your driveway.lol I watched a friend do that on his gsxr 600 even after I reminded him to check for old gasket. Lol
yup, pump pumps oil straight to the filter, only bypass is the pressure pop-off on the pump (~75 psi) and the bypass in the filter itself for delta P across the filter media. I've seen a few people double-gasket filters when I was in the shop. Did it myself too once or twice. One of mine drove 20 miles and was only seeping oil...a few drops on the driveway and the owner brought it back.
