So I have had just the most difficult time hunting down a third member for my '77 sr5 standard bed. I am planning on just going with an overhaul. Somethin a bit higher. I want to turn my 4.11 into a 3.53. Just found out that the pinion in old diffs has 10 splines (at least it is this way on a '78). The only ring and pinion gear sets I have found for 8" 3rd's has a pinion spline count of 27. With this is mind I started searching for a diff flange that is 27 spline and old style driveshaft flange compatible. Something like a multi holed universal fit. With my luck the ring gear would also not fit on my '77 set up. Or would it? Ultimately my question is this: Can I fit a 3.53 gear set meant for a '79-up model differentials into my '77 8" 3rd. If so, how easily? For reference: My trans/diff combo is W50/G082. Any and all suggestions would be most righteous and excellently received. Thanks, all!
Yes, you can swap a later model third member toyota 8" up to 1995. You can redrill the flange to fit the earlier bolt pattern. You can also swap gears if you get a newer style flange available at any toyota 4x4 shop online predrilled for 2-3 different patterns.
Excellent. Thank you!!! I am hoping to start on it pretty soon. It would be nice to finally know what a quiet diff is like. Also I just looked up Yukon gear sets and could only find 4.11 to be the tallest. Only 3.53 I could find—or around that size—is from Nitro.
