Should be quite noticeable. Carb and header wakes any engine up. The 21r is a little gutless compared to the 20 and 22r but can run plenty strong. I've had a couple.

OK thank you. What's with the 21r anyway. They are just odd. I never find them online. What did they originally come out of?

Ahh the 21R and its elusive info lol. The 21R is identical to a 20R but with a smaller bore. Same stroke as 20 and 22R. Same head and intake as 20R. They were only in Japan, typically in big fork lifts or trucks as celicas to meet "compact vehicle" motor size regulations of 2.0 liters. 20r is 2.2 and 22r is 2.4.

Pretty much consider it a 20R as far as sensors, gaskets and hard parts go. There torque curve is about 1000 rpm higher peak but they should get you around fine. The exhaust tone is unique. Little higher pitch than the usual Toyota growl.

How common is the 21r in the US? I've always thought the 18rc was the rare one.

It didn't come installed in anything USDM. But are often found as replacement motors since they got taken out of jap cars at 50k miles.
