I bought a generic, aluminum T-handle off ebay that I planned to polish up and adapt to replace the plastic parking break handle. Well, I started looking at the parking break set up on ebay to get an idea of how to make it work and I noticed that the ones from my trucks age range seem to have a button on the inside of the T-handle where your index finger would grab. I don't remember that button being there on my truck. Does anyone else have the button? is it standard on the trucks? And if so, what exactly does it do? I thought that twisting the handle made it release. I'll go home and take a closer look tonight, but wanted to see if there was a way to omit the button and still have the break function so I can use the aluminum handle.

I don't have the button . Just the tug and turn method ...they may have added the button later years
I've had several friends of mine drive my truck at xcross ... And there always getting in it and fussing the parking brake trying to release it ...maybe they added the button for slow folks

 

Mine has a button on the back side of the handle like a trigger. I haven't tried releasing the brake without using the button (pull, twist, slide in)

BTW it's "brake". Breaks are bad, brakes are good.

My 78 is solid. Can't recall if my 92 had the button. I do know I can use that T bar to flip a fat 180

 

I'm pretty sure it's a generation thing... My 88 4Runner has no button, but my Dad's 95 4Runner and a 92 pickup that someone I know owns both have the button.

 

I guess my 92 could have. It was five years ago and I've had 3 more old ones since. Lol. I think taking the handle apart and seeing exactly what the button does and if it can be eliminate. The other option would be swap the whole t bar assembly from an older gen. Seems to just be a 5th gen thing.

 

94 has the button on the short end of the "T", on the back.
Pull trigger, rotate, and let it slide on it.

 

93 Has trigger.
