I haven't had the bed off yet, but I assumed that I would have to change the tank for the engine swap, since the 22R is carbed. Then I started looking at replacement tanks and it seems that the replacement tanks on some have both setups ready to go. So here's the question:
Did Toyota make two tanks for the 2wd pickup? one for the 22r and one for the 22re? Or were they just made with one tank and had the unneeded holes blocked off? I think I know the answer, but I hope I'm wrong and can keep my tank, since its in good shape.
Also, there is a chance that I may have to run a 1 inch body lift on the truck to do the swap. (not sure yet) If that's the case, has anyone come across "extended range" gas tanks for the 2wd trucks anywhere? All I can find are for 4wd which I think is different.

    Thanks

I'mma got out on a limb and say there probably the same to cut cost and increase production may use a block of plate on top or a different fuel pickup between the the carb and efi models . Never had my bed off or owned a efi model to confirm tho

I thought longbeds had the larger tanks?

Maybe it's just the earlier years, I'm not sure.

i believe the efi and carb are different. one has an integrated supply line with the sending unit for carb, and the efi has two separate spots, one for the efi pump and supply assembly, and the sending unit on its own.

i know that std cab, short beds have a 12 gallon tank, long bed single cab, and extra cab trucks have 16 gallon tanks. this info can be found in your factory owners manual (for those who still have em)

Tanks are the same between R and RE. There are 2 plates on all efi era tanks. One small one for the fuel sending unit and one larger one for fuel pickup in carbed applications and used for the fuel pump in RE applications.

From memory 3rd gen standard cab short box are just under 12 gallons. Long box standard cab is around 14 gallons and x cab is 16-18 gallons.

The difference between the two, in 84-88 trucks, is that the EFI tank has the pump in the tank so it has to have a hole big enough to put the pump through. The carb 22R tank is the same shape, but has a hole just big enough for the pickup and return line plate, which is smaller than is needed to get a high pressure EFI fuel pump through. Both tanks also have a port where the level sending unit is installed, and of course, fill and fill vent holes.

89+ 2wd short wheel base are 13.5 gal according to everywhere I've seen but this thread. I've put 13 gal in mine. 17 or 17.5 gal for everything else (lwb, 4wd, dually, etc)

I need to get up and walk around before the tanks empty anyway. maybe I'm just getting old :(
