I'm planning on attempting it this weekend. I was curious about adjusting the timing or will i have to even worry about it and would I need to change the spark plug gaps. Guys any tips, tricks, or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to also be putting in the GM module and Coil with this that Scrub88 recommended for me. Thanks

After researching a little more you'll wanna try to find a 85 and up 22r dizzy . Toyota switched to a Honeywell design sensor in the distributor wich is supposedly a more reliable sensor ...based on a lot of old celica guys input .. You won't need to switch or change gaps in the plugs cause your not altering compression or fuel ratios . We're plug gap becomes a factor

Man thanks for your help! I'm going to the parts house in the morning and getting the stuff you recommended! What do you think about pertronic kit to convert my existing dizzy to electronic or would you still get the new 85 and up dizzy?

I'd go for pertronic conversion kit ...I'm kinda Leary of rebuilt remanufactured distributors from parts stores ..if you found a oem junkyard dizzy that be great but that's rare these days .. Really boils down to rebuilt Chinese or questionable internal parts in the new distributor vs reliable aftermarket performance based company Petronics electronic conversion kit ..with your already familiar dizzy and a new hei module ..

What is the purpose behind upgrading to a newer one? Does it get rid of stuff? Hotter spark?

Never heard of someone doing this.. never really looked though, soo...

Switching to a newer elctronic dizzy of a newer truck enables a few options like running the newer Toyota coil igniter combo or using a hei gm ignition module cheap reliable and everywhere . Buy far the most popular reason for doing this mod .. It's just updating from a mechanical dash pot distributer to a two wire electronic dizzy and coil setup wich is slightly more reliable than the 77and older setup

If you do buy remanufactured dizzy .get the best one they have with a warranty if possible in case it takes a dump on you. And make sure to use a aluminum plate with heat sink compound on the hei module mount it were it will get a little air cooled

hey scrub88. Im having no luck finding a conversion kit or a 22r dizzy around here. I think Im going to try my luck with a parts house 22r dizzy. Sorry but I have another question for ya. My 76 dizzy has one vacuum line running to it for the advance. The pics I have seen of 22r dizzys show to vacuum ports on them. Do i need to hook both of them up and if so could I "T" the one line I have going to my stock one. Or should I cap one of them?

Yea I'd figure you would have to order the pertronic kit .as its mainly performance oriented ...try or compare parts store dizzy price vs ordering the kit ...just to see if its a big difference
The vacuum dash pots on the 22r distributer are vacuum advances most if to all us 22r Guys only use one the outer one it has the most timing curve adjustment some guys don't use it at all and use the mechanical advance in the distributer . This will not be a issue the two nipples on the distributer you can pick wich one it runs better on and stick a cap on the other one ..you'll need to reset your timing anyway after the dizzy swap . . ..

Reason they got two is based on emission standards changing and how well the motor could idle and be the most efficient at not polluting the air ..

He's not using there coils or distributors or hei modules I'm not a fan of there dizzys the or coils and there hei modules ..he's using the the sensor conversion kit to convert mechanical dizzy to electric seeing its a Honeywell sensor in the Petronic kit same used in the oem dizzy .there should be no problem and using a hei gm designed 4 prong hei module . In Lou of the stock igniter .so the only really part maid buy pertronic in his dizzy is about.a foot of wire . This ignition swap is extremely popular with celica road race guys and and extreme 4x4 wheelers . We're replacing a hard to find 80 dollar igniter vs a 15 dollar igniter available everywhere
On his other post We discussed using only gm products for the swap and Pertronic Honeywell Oem pickup sensor .

im not against the gm module swap just the pertronix brand never had luck with it ,plus ive never had problems with my stock stuff but when I do ill experiment a bit with the gm module
