I am currently rebuilding my 22re. It had 250,000 miles on it and the crank had a little too much play. my main question is when i am done, later on i would like to beef it up a bit by adding a street header kit and a efi intake performance package (Big bore throttle body, ported intake assembly, flow matched fuel injectors, teflon gasket set and intake). can a stock rebuilt engine take these additions without messing up the engine again? Thanks!
It sure can. Stock grade bottom end will hold up fine to a cam and better breathing. Many of us have done it on carbed engines for years. Run a good brand bearing for the crank, some moly piston rings if you can afford the extra cost and a good quality oil pump. Should last another 250k that way.
And I highly recommend any port work you can do to the intake manifold and head. The later style EFI intake flows better. Straight throttle body vs tipped down like the old style. If I was to port one, I'd find the good kind at the junkyard and port it. Then the day you swap its quick since you're changing intakes. And its mental insurance in case yours has any problems when it comes out. Plus you can port that one after and sell it.
yes, it can take them however, you wont see a whole lot of performance increase from those mods. if youre rebuilding the engine, now is the time to do the internal stuff that will net you more power. cam, porting the head, bigger valves, upping the compression some. you just cant do too wild or it wont pass smog anymore.
