Changed the oil in my truck(first time since I bought it). Put in Valvoline 10w-30. Started to notice a small tick after it was nice and warm coming off the freeway. So I checked and adjusted the valves ( only a few were a little tight). Now the tick has intensified. When I adjusted the valves I put cylinder 1 tdc and adjusted. Cylinder 2 tdc and adjusted and so forth. So my question is, is there a better sequence for making the adjustments? Or should I try a but thicker oil? Or should I tighten the valves slightly beyond spec as the valves may have become stretched?
Did u adjust both intake and exhaust on each cylinder at the same time . Here is a common way to do the valves on r series engines and there are some other methods as well this is the most common of course use the 20r clearance specs but same steps YouTube

Ok. Adjusted in the proper sequence (all clearances were pretty much spot on). Still the tick... I asked a guy at work what he thought, because he's got a 80's yota with a 22r and he's generally very knowledgeable. He said that that's just how these motors are. Basically that when your valves are correct, they should make some noise. Any truth to that? Anybody with experience with these motors? Any input greatly appreciated.
Yea the 20 and 22 series motors are kinda known for there valve train noise they all tick its pretty common
I am having this excate same problem, adjusted my valves, right where there are supposed to be. Is there any type of lubricant at an auto parts store you can buy that is specifically designed for this and quieting it down?
Marvel mystery oil helps but its not a cure mine are loud as hell with a crower 2 cam sewing machine on crack noise
Oh yeah the tappits as we call it on Guam.I have three yotas and they all have their own tick tick.Its like my kids voices you don't need to see them to know which kid is talking.It actually helps me hear other problems that come up.Once I hear a strange sound my ears stand up.
Make sure that you DO NOT over tighten that valve cover!!! I noticed that it only takes one half a turn to over do it, It's not that you have any valves out of specifications. The valve cover has an Oil diffuse tray the rockers are tapping that when the engine hits highway temperature, Check the valve cover for wear on the diffuse tray. Hope this helps!
