I have the opportunity to buy a 89 pickup 22r with a g40 trans and i currently have a 95 toyota pickup with a 22re and a a43d trans. I was just wondering if i have both trucks side by side how hard is the swap? I see alot of people doing the 5 speed swap so i was just wondering if it is the same thing. Thanks in advance
I don't really know trans codes so whats the g40 and the a43d.Tried to google it and it just got confusing. What is your goal to use the 89 trans in the 95 or just an even swap to both trucks?
Ok wait so i see the 95 22re auto under your post. You want to run the 89 4 speed in the 95.You should be able to transfer everything you need right over.Check if the 95 has the whole already cut out for the clutch master.Sometimes the whole is there already otherwise you have to cut one.You are probably going to end up wanting a man 5 speed but to answer your question yes.
Sorry for the confusion about the transmission codes. The plan was just to swap out the 4 speed and part out the rest. I just wanted to make sure it is not going to be too much of a trouble. Thanks for the response
Going from automatic to manual is never a direct swap ! Its can be done but dont look over the small stuff either. Clutch pedal assembly, slaves and masters, clutch lines, reverse lights. Theres many little things that no one ever mentions. You may also need to modify your driveshaft if there is any length difference in the trans.
You dont need to modify the drive shaft but you will need the one from the 89.I didnt go into detail about it because it sounded like you knew what you were doing.I've done it a couple times so if you have any questions just holler.Everything you will need is on th 89 just try not to booger the clutch lines.
depends on length of transmission. My A43D was longer than my W58, so when I did the manual conversion, I had to get my driveshaft lengthened.
No doubt the drive shaft lengths are different but the 89 will have the drive shaft he will need so no modding needed.
The OP has the whole donor truck, all the parts he needs are there! FYI you probably want to swap the diff too unless you don't plan on ever taking it on the highway. Your auto truck probably has in the neighborhood of 3.7:1 or 3.9:1 final drive in it for the automatic. If you put the 4 speed in, it has a 1:1 4th gear instead of the automatics .7 (ish) and you'll be screaming about 4k+ rpm at 70...not so good for the gas tank, engine, or your ears on a long trip. the 4 speed rear end should be a 3.07:1 ratio to give it very similar top gear RPM as your current auto. It should also be an 8" diff which is stronger and has many more options available for ratios and limited slip stuff. As for the benefits of the swap, you'll get better mileage (if you include the rear axle in the swap) and the fun of having to row the gears, but the G40 won't stand up to much power or abuse. Also, being a 4 speed, the gears are spaced moderately wide so you don't get all the acceleration benefits of keeping the engine in the power band (When you look at the overall ratios (trans+diff) the 5 speeds are almost the same range of ratios, but have an extra in the middle for less difference between gears. If the parts truck is cheap and you don't mind getting dirty I'd say go for it. I'd take a 4 speed manual over an auto still.
