So I managed to grenade my second 7.5" rear end today. The first time was last year when I was drifting and had my supercharged 4cyl. Well, it happened again today, but this time I was driving to the store very mellow. I have swapped in a V8 and am going to run the Ford 8.8" rear end. I Googled some things in hopes to find someone that has done it, and I came across a thread on here but it was from a few years back- I can only imagine that user is no longer around. So, has anyone done this swap personally? I would like some feedback

 

can you post more picture's of your truck? engine pic's, is that a roll bar in there?

 

I would think use a 4.0 v6 model ford ranger truck they come with the 8.8 but have same bolt pattern as the yota... next is finding out the width... explorer also has a 8.8 and I think its a tad wider. Also I belive the 5.0 expo has a larger splin count on axles .. if I recall from my pre runner days

The truck is in fact caged, I have a set of very comfortable no-name race seats with 4 point harness as well. The truck was chopped at the firewall and I installed a 95 4-runner front clip, so that is why it doesnt look like a 92 should.

I have done some exstensive research on the ford 8.8" but was looking to get some insight from anybody that may have done it personally. And fwiw, the ford 8.8" axle is 1.5" longer when measured from WMS to WMS.

 

Here are a few random pictures of the build. Suprisingly, I dont have any fresh pictures that show the completed project. I will take them today (I need to now that I think about it), however, the truck is in the garage at the moment and I need two people to open it, but im home alone right now.

 

I would just run toyota 8 inc form v6 then swap in a supra lsd with a crush sleeve eliminator kit

Here is an off-the-wall question (and dont laugh)...

Are there any products on the market that are "beefy" LS that would work with the stock rear end ? Basically a pumpkin swap? I dont know much about the Toyota market, I usually swap things out completely.

The first 7.5" I literally shattered into pieces, and that was with ~200hp and a welded diff. I havent opened the one I broke yesterday yet but it obviously doesnt hold ~400hp, this time I didnt weld it (open diff).

 

Those explorer rear ends are about an inch or so wider than the tacoma rear ends, so I doubt you'll want to deal with that.

Are there any companies that make or mod a ford 9" rear end thats a custom fit?

I want a pretaco rear end in my Tacoma, but I know they wont last long..

 

Like mentioned before, I have exstensively researched the Ford 8.8 and am pretty much set on it, unless I get a well informed response on as to why I shouldnt. I am very hard-headed.

The 8.8" measures a total of 59.685", or very close to. My stock toyota 7.5" measures 58.5XX". I am not worried about the extra width as I can utilize it for traction and my proposed wide body. Also, if it proves to be an issue, I will shorten it to the length I need.

Although street legal, the intended purpose of this truck is for track use; highly modified. Anything can be built with the resources I have.

Just use the explorer 3.73 31 spline disc brake rear end. Custom driveshaft and a brake line. And a little bit of tank hammering and it should go right in.

You will break springs next if it launches good

 

Well I picked up the 3.73 LS Ford 8.8 yesterday from the junk yard. There was about 6 or 7 of them available, so I took the lowest mileage one. I picked up new calipers and disks and am prepping the rear end today. I need to clean and paint it and also flush it out with some fresh fluid.

It cost me $250 for the rear end, complete. I also snatched some hardware and bracketry to help me out. I forgot to grab the driveshaft but I can get that at any time, I don t need it right away, but it is needed to complete the swap. Here is the picture I took after I arrived back home.

 

this thing is going to be a speed demon.

 

The truck moves very quickly. The stock open differntial broke sideways in turns all the time. One legged a lot also.

I am pulling the rear end from the toyota right now and will upload some pictures of the progress, along with the few things I have run across so far, minor things.


- I am running 16x8" Starion rims. The first two attachments show the clearance of the stock Ford calipers and brake rotors. There is "considerable" room, you may be able to fit a set of 15" on there but I do not have any to show.

-You will need a set of Ford lug nuts. The Toyota and Ford have the same lug pattern, but different lug threads.

-There is a picture of the brake preportioning valve and rod that must be installed on the Ford rear end. This is if you are still using the Toyota brake system. In my case, I am. You will need to cut off and reweld the mounting bracket in the correct placement. I will post pictures when I get to this step.

-You will lose your parking brake unless you fabricate a way to attach to the Ford setup. My truck will be getting an hydraulic e-brake used for drifting, so I cant elaborate much on how to make anything work. I can, however do a write-up on that installation when time comes.

-We had to cut off my exisiting u-bolts because the bottom of them was bent all out of whack from scraping things.

-The last attachment shows the Toyota rear end compaired to the Ford 8.8" rear end. Excuse my cheap quick jack handle measurements. The red handles show the leaf spring mounts; they are damn near identical to each other which is good for the ease of installation. The black handle shows the slight offset of the two pumpkins. The Ford is offset towards the passenger side about 2", but will be okay on the driveshaft. In my case, I am running the Ford T5. You will have to modify the fuel tank in the corner for clearance of the Ford pumpkin . My plan is to very nicely beat it in. Fuel capacity is not top priority for me but keep in mind you will lose a small amount. I dont want to do the math for you.

Is anybody here knowledgeable in rim sizing ? The rear end is installed minus the driveshaft and brake line.

However, the 16x8", -10 offset Starion rims do not fit well whatsoever; they stick out way too far for my liking, and it rubs like a MF. I am interested if 16 or 17x9s if but am unsure how the whole offset would be decided. Does anybody have a picture of some 17s on a 92 ?

The cage was done by myself and a buddy of mine. It was the first vehicle I had ever caged.
