Hey guys, looked through a ton of info here on the site and still havent been able to answer my question. I know everyone seems to swap to the W series transmission and that requires modification of the speedometer cable and cutting out the floor and changing mounting brackets on crossmember. What I am wanting to know is what 5 speed transmission is a direct swap for my 1989 2wd with the G40 4 speed and 22r. I am guessing any of the G series 5 speeds? If so which one would be the best to look for. Thanks for the help!

w50 and w52 are steel case, w55/56/58 are allow center sections. maybe that helps.

Well, I know I have the W55-58, but how do you tell those apart? Looked it up on wiki but it looks like they used all of them in the last four years of making the pickup before they changed the body style.

If you don't have access to the build plate/sticker of the doner vehicle you'll have to figure out gear ratios. Either open 'er up and count teeth or spin the input shaft and count revs of the output.

I got burned on that before. bought a "w58" but got a w57. same 1-4 but OD like our trucks (.86:1 instead of .78) so the cressidas screaming along about 3k rpm at 65.
