Well, I went out and dropped some cash this weekend. My pickup needs a new engine, the old one shows every sign that it's almost done. I want to go to EFI as well, it's much friendlier in the cold winters up here, burns less fuel, and I can use a remote starter with it. :) I also have a W55 to replace the G57 in the truck now.

On order are a Pacesetter ceramic coated header, Crane 0010 cam, OS pistons, OS bearings, oil pump, metal-backed timing kit, NEW front cover (the old one was chain damaged), gasket set and a water pump. The '85 Celica engine is at the machine shop, awaiting the pistons for the final hone.

Once it's together, I will need to install an EFI pump and return line. Does anybody know if the fuel tank is different between carb and EFI, or just the fuel pickup assembly?

Sounding good, best of luck with the build. Not sure if the tanks are the same or not and only require changing the pickup assembly to convert, but you could also use an inline electric pump rated for EFI pressure and hooking up a return is easy enough. What I did on my 75 was just "Tee'd" into the vent line on the filler neck for a return from my bypass regulator.

Glad you're interested, here's an update. No pics yet, it's frickin' cold up here, I'll get out to the garage and snap some on the weekend.

Picked the engine up today after work. The block was bored, honed and decked. The head was rebuilt with new valves and resurfaced. The new pistons were installed on resized rods. The crank was ground and polished.

The rest of the engine parts are here except the cam and header. Once they arrive, and it warms up a little, I can start throwing it together. In the meantime, I'll clean and paint the valve cover and intake manifold at work, so she looks good when finished.

Left to do- resurface the flywheel, buy a clutch kit (I won't do this much work and install a used clutch!), fuel pump, return line, and figure out the wiring for the EFI. I might just run the new engine on the carb to break it in, not sure yet.

    Cold is not good!

I understand from our TV Weather forecasters that there is a huge mass of very cold air up your way. The good news, it's going to move. The bad news it will come done here in a couple of days. Was 68 F today here in Kansas where I live. I sure understand how hard it is to work out in the cold garage at night. I built two Harley motors in evenings out in my garage. Of course you always do that in the winter so you can ride in the summer!

Good luck to you as you continue your build. I learn so much from what you all do. Stay warm. My friends in Calgary have told me about those Alberta winters!

    Best,
    Dave

In general, we get more cold than Calgary, they get more snow. They're at a higher altitude, in the foothills of the Rockies. We have a better dragstrip :D with a lower altitude.

I think our distinct seasons help us with our rodding hobbies. With a distinct off-season, there are some wicked projects cooked up every year. Most are not ready in time for spring, but by fall at the street legal drags, there's some killer machines around. In September of '07 I saw a '72 Chevelle that I had seen driven on the street rip off an 8.8 quarter mile. The same car has dyno'd at 1103 wheel horses. Mindboggling.....

    Here's a link-http://www.performance-shop.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=54527.0

The dyno video is awesome. Once they hit the throttle it revs from 3000 to 8000 RPM in a heartbeat!

    pics

I fired up the heat and spent an enjoyable afternoon in the garage today, even made a little progess! I laid out the RE for the truck, took pics, then mounted the block on a stand. I spent the rest of the time putting a W58 trans together for the RTE car with proper (!) speedo gears and a Billy M. (CelicaSupra.com) shift bushing set. The shift bushing kit includes a Marlin Crawler type bushing along with a bronze insert to replace the rubber bushing in the shift mechanism. Once it's in there's absolutely NO play in the shifter, can't wait to drive it.

I'm still waiting on the cam and header, once they arrive (the cam, anyway) I can start the engine assembly.

Here's the engine. I love me some minty-fresh engine parts!

You can see the tranny on the bench, a 7MGTE on the stand, and my flame-painted flashlight!

Here's a wheel I painted for my rat-rod pickup look. I'd like to add Baby moon or bullet hubcaps.

The knowledge took 50 years, you'll get there.:p The garage is new this year, 24x24, with all my crap still in piles...when it gets organized, it'll be better. I built my turbo car in my driveway.....

    This is taking a while....

Finally got the cam today, the shop received it and shipped it to someone accidentally! It's back home now, work will begin when weather permits.

Since I have time, I'd like to paint the valve cover, maybe flames or something.... How do you get paint to stay on aluminum without chipping? The only thing I've had any luck with is VHT wrinkle paint.

I forgot the location of his house but i think his house would've been west of mine?

And yep, same city as the BTK killer Dennis Rader.

Engine underway. The blood-red bearing lube looks kinda vampire-esque...

The header finally arrived, I hope it stays this shiny once it's in the truck.

I painted the valve cover, using zinc chromate primer on the aluminum....this is a yellowy-green color that was common in WW2 aircraft, I kinda liked the look but thought nobody would get the connection, so I painted over it with engine enamel. Pics when it's done, I'm trying to make it unique.
