First official post! I made a call today and got a price on a 22r. Its the engine itself only, no accessories on it which is fortunate because turns out from what I can gather my 21ru has all of the 22r components on it that will cross over directly . So now I just got to wait to make sure the head on the engine is solid, and get it shipped down to me. Im assuming my 4spd will bolt right up to the engine as well, but I plan to drop and ditch that thing ASAP after getting the giant up and rolling again properly. What rebuild does everyone go with?? I was just going to go to Napa and get all the rings, gaskets, etc from there. I just bought this truck and already so hooked on getting it restored and reputable. Right now its top speed I've gotten to was 62 and it was sketchy. Also, being these engines are small and easy enough, i'm not expecting many if any "suprises" when yanking it. So far it just seems as simple as a grab and stab...is this correct? Or is there a lurking danger somewheres That i should be concerned about..I'm Excited as hell, and just a tiny bit nervous. Cant screw up and let the lady make fun of me on this one. lol heres a pic if you diddnt see it in the introductions I've read alot on the hybrid, very cool stuff, but keeping it a budget build right now and just want it to be comfortable, and be able to keep highway speeds -70-75 without burning qts of oil at a time per drive. BTW, those pics were day of purchase before I drove it home 8 hrs, the emission lines have been ripped out, timing advanced, and it still runs like crap. Compression test revealed terrible results which is why were doin this 22r swap now, and the fact this engine was probably in a forklift.
Thank you Rick. Yesterday I totally forgot to call the yard and get the engine shipped out the door. So First thing Monday I'll handle that. But What I did do was RE power wash the engine bay, install new starter so I can atleast drive it in the mean time, Replaced clutch slave cylinder (leaks out completly in a few short drives) change brake pads, and wheel bearings. And scrape more ancient history of oily build up and dirt off of the steering and suspension parts. Man I hope I can find a webber soon for the new engine. Gonna suck putting a gem in the bay and cap it with the stocker POS carb.
The Weber will definitely wake up your motor. You'll have to do a few more mods besides the carb, although there is so much potential in the 22R. Keep up the enthusiasm!!!
What exactly are you referring to?? Ripping out the emissions junk? I'm a Newb to the small engine and carb setup world...
Got the 22r from the junk yard on tuesday!! Tear down is complete, rebuild is ordered, Webber 32/36/manual choke is ordered, Tuesday will the the big day for re assembly!!!!!! Cylinder head cleaned up Real nice. Still gotta polish the ports, and lap in the valves tomorrow. I still cant get over how small and simple these things are. I've never owned something you could lift the head off with one person besides my motorcycle.
Besides the carb, you will need to work on its exhaust (headers, cat, & mufflers), advance your timing, & a street cam if you want to go one step further.
The first thing I did when I got the truck home with that worn out POS 21r was jump that timing as far advanced as I could within a safe limit. Absolutly will be doing that. Headers now that you mentioned it, I think That would be a fun project to make a set. I'll have the 21 just sitting on a pallet and theres a perfect way to start mocking up a set. I was just going to throw on a cherry bomb or some non restricted muffler on the exhaust to let it breathe. What is a popular brand to go with on these Minis?? And Thanks for the replies.
Got some goodies last week!!! Been busy scraping and scrubbing 30 years of worn out gaskets and grime and re assembling everything. Here's an update Here's a q I have that needs answering...the oil pump DRIVE gear, when slid on the crankshaft, was tight over the key way. But when pressed on ALL the way to the chain sprocket, it seems as if its not tight on a key way completely. It has slop in a BACK AND FORTH motion, but it is solid tight left to right. Does that make sense? It can move in and out a small amount on the crank, but it won't spin which tells me its safe and locked on a key way, but not held still... Suggestions? Also, how do you prime the oil pump? Is it necessary on this engine? And is there a gasket for the chain tensioner? I bolted it strait on to the front of the block. Out of 500 parts that came with rebuild kit, nothing looked like it would fit the tensioner Thankyou and sorry for spelling, I'm on my phone typing.
Edit: I'm an idiot, the drive gear will be sandwiched by the crank pulley. Duh!. And ill just pour some heavy lol in the pump to "prime" it.
Got alot of progress made over the past few nights. Went ahead and shot VHT black ceramic coating on the intake to balance the exhaust cover. Also threw on a new clutch while it was out and right there. Fogged the engine bay and stabbed it in. Heres a few shots. I mounted the webber but diddn't have enough time to run the choke cable to the inside of the cab. But i'll get it fired up monday and see how it goes.
