so 3 years ago i was living in the bay area, but i used to check portland craigslist all the time trying to get my hands on my previous 86 hilux. one day i happened across a bagged 86 ext. cab in scappoose (hillbilly ass town a short distance north of portland-i oddly enough live there currently) my moms bf (who i live with currently) wasnt very far in location and i was at least looking to trade out of my 94 explorer one way or another, so i asked if he could check it out for me and see if it was worth my time effort and money to take the 650+ mile trip to check it out for myself. he declined to do so and eventually it got sold. fast forward about a year later, and sure enough its back on craigslist. i had no money since i had been recently fired from my job and relocated back to the portland area, i didnt think whoever owned it would be interested in my trade. it disapeared for a few months, then one day it returned again. i figured it couldnt hurt to just ask and see what happened, right? turned out the guy would have taken my trade but he was unable to drive a manu8al transmission due to injuries. it disappeared yet again another 2 or 3 months later it resurfaced on craigslist. i figured new owner try again.... WRONG. same guy, so no dice. i also tried to trade hime for a chop top static dropped nissan he had that looked kinda cool, but i heard a ****ty story on that recently. anyway... so still no dice on this dang truck a few weeks ago i see another ad on craigslist for a bagged 86 toyota... "my old one? bagged???" nope... its this damned truck yet again. so i ask anyway. "wanna trade?" (he was moving out of state to az) "give me a few days to think about it, i'd like to get a better cash offer, " a few days pass i ask again. nope no better cash offers came his way, this is sounding good for me, but then he was being kinda flakey about gettin back to me every time i brought up checkin eachothers trucks ou. finnally we agreead upon an day to meet up.?o.k. i got some stuff to do i'll call you when i'm in town." i get gas, go get lunch and my phone rings... rick (low down legends presiddent) "hey, you still gonna meet up with that guy about that truck?" yeah "well he just called me and wanted to know if i was still a buyer at 1300 and appearently he hit up rob (our vp) too." damn... well i guess we'll see what happens right? anyway met the dude looked it over and it was worth my bone stock 94 explorer and a set of snow chains, especially when i got 2 extra sets of rims with it. so now i have 2 bagged toyotas now for the fun part of te story... 86 ext cab long bed, full walkthru, bagged and shaved everywhere, 22r with a weber i'll also be adding my stainless header soon as well. inside has leather buckets that look like they came from a full size chevy, dakota digital guages also for a chevy (no they dont work properly-just the speed and voltage are correct.), full carpet in the bed, dc5000 compressor, two 3 gallon tanks, parker valves..... sure im forgetting something. currently sitting on the 18s from my toxic toy.
second pic is when my club prez had me meet him at one of the lots he does wheel repairs at in portland and it was all high end **** then my pile of bagged toyota... when i say high end i mean the banners went benze, bmw, lotus, jag, porche, lambo, ferrari, aston, etc. 3rd is a pic i took in a parking lot... can you spot daves new toy? 4th... had to drop some wheel/tires off at the shed when i got it home the next day. the steelies on it are 17s but they are being traded for a set of black 15s. the chrome dual 5 spoke rims are a 17 and i guess one is cracked real bad, i have not yet looked at them. might fix em might sell em?
3rd pic is the interior now... but since we have added a tailgate handle inside... i'll finish the panel sat might also start on new door panels since it only came with one and it was just cardboard wrapped in carpet. 4th is slammed out in front of the shop, where the toxic toy is currently being held captive... oh wait... its the same shop its been in for a year now.
2nd pic is its 1st day of taking me to work and third is the next day after i put my 18s on it... cant wait for the 15s. i think itll lay out better in the back. the 18s rub hard in the tubs and maybe i can ride lower around corners? last pic i took yesterday morning when i woke up just cuz i decided to park in front of the house.
me too, thats why i'm making this my camping rig, so if i dont wanna pay for a room but other members of my club do, i just park in the lot next to them. the only bad is that the hinge on the canopy is in real bad shape and getting ready to fall apart completly. good news is i scored (if it will even work as its from a fullsize canopy) a frame with hinge. i'm hoping to get new door panels , a stereo installed and the hinge worked on in the next two weeks. i didnt think id like it at first either, but mow that i've had it for a few weeks i'm really diggin it. but the lack of glass behind me makes for a difficult time of backing into and out of places. i do have another canopy i can use that has glass on the sides, plus a working rear lid, and glass on the top front. it'd have to be cut for the cabthru, and painted, and i'd have to cut the carpet from the other canopy and buy more carpet for the extra hight. i'm gonna wait til it stops raining here though befor i get too deep into that project. plus its a matter of since i plan on camping in it, do i want all those windows?? and the canopy thats on it is already sound deadend, and i plan on putting a stereo in it, so do i want people to see it??? i'm really torn on wat to do with it at all. everyone keeps telling me to make it a hearse. i dont even know what color i want it yet.
so did 3 other guys in my club... i still cant believe its mine. i did however get to meet the origional owner a few weeks ago. this truck was a 16th bday present back in 86 and the chicks bf did all the work. not a lot has changed since she owned it, but it started life in fresno. she said it changed hands a few times before disapearing. just a few months ago she and her family moved to oregon. she noticed it as they were pulling into the parking lot at my work (i work at fred meyer) and started saying how it looked just like her old truck and within a few minutes of talking found that it was her truck. and the only thing i left from the sins rod and custom shp was the skulls. i might still remove those too.
Congradulations man, I'm really happy for you and I can tell your happy too. I have a feeling the truck is going to be well taken care of, I doubt very much the two of you will ever be apart again! I love seeing stories like this, reminds me of how much my truck means to me. I know it's old school but: "Oh what a feeling, Toyota!" Have a great day!
its been well abused over the years, but as soon as i'm done sinking cash into my 91, this thing is getting redone too.
So i know.... I really dig this truck... Sad but true i just dont have the time nor funds for it anymore... It is for sale on both portland and seattle craigslist... I ve already had hoards of offers though. One for a bagged 93 reg cab even... Dont worry though i still have toxic and it is coming along just fine... Ive not been posting though cuz my computer took a huge dump on me...
Still have this truck and its still for sale only now its got a blown tranny and floater bearing.... I am now without a driver as toxic is still not done yet...
Traded "blindspot" off last weekend, sad but true. I traded it broken down and all and got a 99 mazda b2500... I know its not a toyota and yes i am ashamed... But its only got 110000 and its a 5spd and it gets me to work so that i can finish my beloved toxic toy...
