I'm Jason from Boise and I just picked up a 77 Hilux. Mechanically it's sound as heck doesn't even leak. Got some plans for it. First thing I need to find I'd that front grill and surround somewhere. Let me know if anyone has a good one mine is cracked with some pieces missing.
Welcome, Jason!!! I like how these model trucks have become kind of popular. There's been a few new members with '74-'78 models. The R motor has been proven to be "bullet-proof." Keep your eyes on eBay for the grille & the panel. Rick
Right on another Boise guy....were creaping up in population on here! Most local junk yards will have a decent handful of those laying around but not with a good grill. Seen a few good grills on Ebay.
good luck with that lol Only way I ended up with good grills was buying a parts truck, you can check my old 77 but its pretty stripped. It was out at Jalopy in Nampa. Theres also a guy called Yota Parts Billy, he posts on Craigslist sometimes, couldnt hurt to check and see what he has.
Dang wish I had the extra cash for that guess I need to stop being so broke. Good to see some locals up here. I hope to get some work done soon once I sort some cash issues out.
Yesss! Another old school Toyota in Boise! Need more of us.....Dang datsun guys are taking over lol. Welcome man!
Thanks the truck has been running pretty good. Fixed the high idle problem and leaned out the mixture a bit but it seems to be eating gas like mad. What should I be getting and is there much improvement with a weber upgrade? It will have to wait til I have some cash but its definitely on the list. The cheap stuff will probably happen first
Sorry tires are 185's but ill probably just get something close whatever is cheapest and not too big to drop the truck. 195's seem to be cheaper for some reason. Should be fine with just doing 3"blocks and 2 1/2 coils. I'll probably be just keeping stock steel rims ditch the dog bowls paint the rims polish the beauty rings and get new chrome lug nuts til I have cash for rims which is pretty far down my list of things I need to do.
Kid I bought it from knew less about carbs than I do. Just needed some adjustment so I just did it by ear best I could. Weber kit is definitely toward the top of my list though
With 3"blocks and 2 1/2 coils you should be ok with fat tires. We cut 3 coils on my old 77 and the stock tires rubbed on curves and bumps.
