So I've bin looking into building a 20/22r hybrid to drop into my 1980 4x4 shortbed. I picked up a stage 2 20r head from LCE with a mild stage 2 cam. my buddy gave me the engine out of his 83 pickup. It needs to be completely rebuilt. so I took the block down to the local machine shop and he had to bore it .60 over (93.5). got 60 over pistons from LCE (I know LC is expensive but it was the only place I could find .60 over pistons). I also picked up a balanced and blueprinted crank from a guy on craiglist. he claims its balanced and blueprinted, no paper work, but it is in better condition then the one I pulled out of it and I gave him twohundred bucks for it so. I am not a mechanic by any means so if anyone has any advice or helpful hints Im all ears B4 machine shop <a href="http://s1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/80longhair/?action=view&current=potteryota069.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/80longhair/potteryota069.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a> <a href="http://s1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/80longhair/?action=view&current=101212003.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/80longhair/101212003.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>after machine shop
Gonna be fun motor any ideas for carb setup . As far as tips go it looks like your heading the right way with quality parts just get your self a good torque wrench and take your time and keep it clean and organized and quality bearings and seals will help keep it going I prefer oem head gaskets but that's just me and arp head studs been using these for a while never a problem
Thats a non laser block? If you wanna run big valves and what not I would ditch that block for a laser block and machine the head to fit. If you want something you can just slap together then that block will work with teh domed pistons just check your clearences. I got a for sale thread with a bunch of stuff for the 20R if ya want.
What you talkin bout Willis? The '81-'84 block is the way to go without getting all ridiculous on valvetrain geometry. Don't confuse the non-mechanic type! Have fun with it - I have a similar build going together for a '76 2wd.
no the domed block if you run big valves on you get valves touching pistons. laser block build up is cake, machine head down call it a day, there is a write up here on the site. More torque, bigger valves to me is worth it.
Ok after two months because of some unexpected dental work, I finaly got around to getting my engine put together. this is what I came up with. an 83 22r block I got for free that i had bored 60 over, balanced crank, new conecting rods/bearings, all new timing components, ARP head studs(not cheep!) stage 2 20r head from LC w/mild stage2 cam, new cannon 20r intake manifold, 32/36 weber and carb. spacer and I also got a 30lb flywheel and new clutch. anyone have anyother ideas or suggestion?
Why did you go with the heavy flywheel? Those motors are usually built for their top end flow, a lightweight flywheel would get ya there faster with a slight loss of low end torque, a heavy flywheel does the opposite. with that night of a setup you should run an electric fuel pump with a regulator and ditch the mechanical. It will give you more stable fuel pressure which that weber will like more. You can run the mechanical, its just a suggestion.
Alright she's in! and seems to be running just fine. probably take her for a short drive tomarow <a href="http://s1275.beta.photobucket.com/user/80longhair/media/DSC00100_zps8fac307e.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1275.photobucket.com/albums/y441/80longhair/DSC00100_zps8fac307e.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSC00100_zps8fac307e.jpg"/></a>
I didn't take the time to clean the engine bay because I have'nt had a drivers license for four years and I just got it back, So, i was alittle impatient and wanted to drive. plus if you could see the rest of the truck you'd understand. SHE'S NOT A LOOKER and half that greese and dirt are holdin her together. but shes still pretty in my eyes.
it seems to be running pretty strong. next thing i need is a cat. back exhaust 2.25 not sure what kind of muffler to put on her, any ideas/suggestions? there is a issue Im running into with the electrical system. I think bad alternator.... or somthing draining the battery.... went out to start it in the morning and there was hardly enough power to turn the starter, then in the afternoon went out to start her and she fired right up. so Im kindof at a loss, hopefuly I can figure it out soon.
