Hi I'm pretty new to working on cars and to this forum so I'm not quite sure if I'm posting this in the right place, anyways I have a 1991 2.4L automatic Toyota Pickup that I've been driving for a little while now (first car and I have loved it so far), anyways I have been wanting to do a couple of cheap mods to the car to improve the performance and fuel economy. I was thinking about removing the old air filter and putting on a cold air intake for starters and I was wondering what other people were using (if you can buy a kit online or if you need to custom fabricate one). Also if anyone has any advice on what else I can do relatively cheaply to get the most out of my truck it would be much appreciated. Thanks so much for the help!

Here's a site that has them.Rock Ripper 22RE, 22REC Cold Air Intake - 50 State Legal Performance wise maybe a few HP also changes the sound when you step on that pedal but main thing is it looks good. Its a good start. Maybe some performance plug wires like Accels or something like that. Depends on how big you want to go.Anyways my name is Joe and welcome to the sight and show us some pics of your truck.

if what you're wanting is better mpg, just do a basic tune up and fluid changes and save your money on the intake. you're not really going to see any gain in power or MPG with it. all its really going to do is make the engine louder. stock these things draw air from the outside already and most intakes change that do pull air from under the hood.
now if you're going for show points and want to make it look better under the hood, then go for it.

I built my own and then later moved it to the other side of the truck and relocated my battery. Did nothing for performance but it looked pretty neat. The 4runner ebay kits for the 22re are the same for our truck however the V6 kits are not. The kit I built was a bit more spendy than the Ebay kit but it looked better in my eyes. Also using the stock plastic charge pipe you can just get the plate to filter adapter and go that route so the only thing being removed would be the stock square box and filter. Moving my intake pipe/filter to same side as intake I did notice a good increase in throttle response, I think partyl due to the fact its filter/MAF/Throttle body and thats it. Plus its on opposite side of exhaust so much cooler airflow

I put my intake on the truck's right side. Much better than spending $100 on an intake pipe and stuff to go over the radiator, lol.

So today I decided to start doing some tune ups on it, I put a part synthetic oil in with a 4 cylinder engine restorer. I changed the spark plugs and put in a new wireset for them old one was really worn out (new wires actually didn't fit as well as my old ones they seem to stick out way too far). I put in Trans-X transmission treatment and put new transmission fluid in along with the rest of my fluids. After all this today it feels like it's running stupidly better lol. I'm still thinking about the intake as well and I'm probably just going to make one myself and do something like CinNaMmon said and relocate my battery and put the intake on the right side. I'll post some pics of my truck here before too long so you guys can take a look at it and see what you think! Thank's for the help guys!

Also I was wondering if there is a way I can get an electrical exhaust cutoff just for fun down the line?

I guess MPG isn't really my main concern it would be nice but I really want to get just a little bit more power and change the sound of engine really.

What are your goals for your truck?

My 1994 started as an automatic xcab with the 22RE.

I guess my overall goal is to keep it looking kinda like a sleeper and just tweak the performance over time without dropping the car significantly. I just want it to sound mean and have a bit more power when I press on the throttle.

you want mean sounding and throttle power....Full header back exhaust...Individual throttle bodies with a race cam!! Almost sound like a rapped rotary engine when your done and it will have some real good pep.

lol no more sleeper after that.

2.25" magnaflow with 2.25" exhaust piping, intake swapped to the intake side to shorten up the intake "path".

Plan it out and do it right the first time.

Yah but most people would think its running like crap with a major exhaust leak till you got on that gas pedal!!

What do you really want to do? If I was going to dump 3 grand into my truck right now, I wouldn't be using LCE to push my 22RE. I'd either save it for a swap or turbo it. :D

Lol I might eventually save up and do something like that but right now I just don't have the money for that kind of work. For now at least I'm going to probably just stick with intake, exhaust, and really whatever I can afford. I was wondering if I fab the intake what size piping I would need?
