So as the title says, I'm still a kid, but don't let that get to you. I'm 17 and have been around cars and bikes as long as I can remember. My ride is a 1980 Toyota pickup, stock 20r an 4 speed 2wd with a not so good 12mpg on the freeway or in the city. Im budget building a 22r/20r hybrid as my senior project. Stretching my limits doing it myself but it's a learning experience, and it will be a fun truck to drive and take to PIR for run what you brung 1/4 mile drag. I'm going to be using stock internals with a port and polished head with bigger valves, most likely engnbldr's oversized for for the hybrid. Ive got a weber for it and will be buying a header eventually. Also have a 5 speed to go behind it. Any info would be appreciated, especially if you have built one!
Welcome! I have family in King County. Where are you located? The R motors in our trucks are bullet-proof. Besides motor work, how does the body & interior look? Rick
Thanks man! Im in Clark County. My motor has 206,000 and is running purrrfectly. My interior is good for who drives it. I got bucket seats from a family friend for free that are in perfect shape, and i just have bedlinered sound deadener for the floor currently. The body is probably a 7 out of 10. My grandpa painted it in my garage for me(he painted a lot in the 70's) but my body work wasnt the best... Its supposed to be 2010 Subaru WRX Blue.
It's nice having Engnbldrs right there. Picked up some stuff recently, including the 268 cam. Considering one of their hi perf 22r heads for my Hilux project but unsure of what hp gains it would actually bring.
We also have NW Team Yota in La Center up north about 30 minutes away from me. The have a good selection and online shop as well.
I've never used either but they both look useful/Toyota specific. And cheap is always good for budget builds!
I'm using the engn bldr rv head with SS valves I ported it and polished it myself at work put a crower stage 2 cam in it . was a decent improvement from my old head wich was limiting my built blocks capability
I'd be interested to see what you did to the intake ports. Wondering what gains could be had by bolting head on as is.
Thanks! Its nice to see how many people really care about there Toyota and don't just abuse the living hell out of it..
I just smoothed the runners with a Dremel and slightly enlarged them while waiting on some parts for the motor . The head is an improvement in its original state but would add a decent cam . To gain some extra
Welcome to TM, kid ... Yeah, we love our yotas here ... Throw up some picz so we can see what you're workin' wit ...
Update: I have nearly finished my new motor, just need to get bolts for the timing chain cover, but that's the least of my worries currently. My truck was stolen yesterday morning from in front of my house. It never seizes to amaze me how many low life's there are in this world, but atleast I know someone else likes my truck... But back to my motor. I built a 20/22r hybrid, it truly does not get any more bolt on then that! I used stock stuff for the bottom and top except the cam, which is an RV2 from my local cam grinder for only $65. 224/234 @ .050", 270/280 advertised, .425"/.440" lift, 110 lobe sep. I did a little port and polishing on the intake and exhaust runner and I also got a weber 32/36 from a friend. I hope this motor cruises when running, and hopefully its in my truck!
