Hello everyone and thanks for letting me be a part of Toyota Minis. I just recently acquired a 1973 Hilux for $550 here in Glendale. From what I can tell it looks pretty original. I have been wanting a pre-1984 for a long time and even had my hands on a nice 1982 when I was in Denver for two year's, long story. I found this one on Craigslist and with a lot of sweet talking to the wife, she decided to let me get it for my birthday and Christmas for 3 years As of right now it will start and run but not idle. I'm thinking it might be a clogged fuel filter or the carbarator might need a good cleaning. the second part is the brakes. it looks like it has a brand new master cylinder but it doesn't stop that great. By that I mean when you push on the break you get nothing until you hit the bottom and then you get everything and you screech to a stop. My plan is to do a front disk break conversion, and I have a contact that is parting out a 77 pickup, he wants $75 a spindle on out minus the wheels. If I do this what else will I need to do the conversion? Spindle, disks, calipers, pads, master cylinder, booster? anything else? Here's some pictures of my new '73 Hilux. Let me know what you think
nice find bra...ar for idle check for vaccum leaks or maybe your timming is a lil off..cant wait to c your progress...keep us posted
welcome! nice truck man. like jaybee said check for vaccuum leaks. i had the same issue and it ended up being a split hose. glad to see another '73 on here!
Def nice find, man ... Welcome to TM ... I stayed off Bethany Home Rd. there in Glendale for several years before the population boom pushed me out ... LOL ... Anyway, that's a sweet yota you got there ... Lookin' forward to a build thread ... We're a bunch of pic whores here so post as many as you want ...
Thanks 85, I grew up next to GCC and now my wife and I and or 2 week old son live on camelback. Last of the pics so far.
Dang nice truck man. Body looks good. Give the brakes a good bleeding. Try raising the idle screw and see if it holds idle or maybe adjust dist.
Welcome to the site! I always like hearing about somebody acquiring an older Toyota truck and then will have some good plans for it. My friend lives in Glendale and works at Fry's Food Store. Rick
Thanks everyone, One question I have about the disk break conversion I have is will I need the booster off of the donor truck? The 73 has a booster already has a booster. And is there anything else I need to get from the donor truck? anybody know?
autozone lists the m/c's as different part numbers. the 73 brake m/c has a slightly larger bore. the stock 73 unit will probably work fine.
Brovender, not sure that it is stock, but you guys would probably know. It is a york compressor and the evaporator unit says its a climatic, but I can't find any info on it. Unfortunatly the venting is broken so the air just runs out the side instead of out of the vents like it's supposed to. Let me see if I can get some pictures up of the AC. Let me know if anyone can think of any info on this bad boy. Burnzya, are you saying that the stock master cylinder and booster on the 73 would be better or at least close to the equipment on the 77 donor that I found? If thats the case that would be nice, since it looks like the PO just put a new one on.
