What 5 speed is a drop-in to replace the 4 speed it currently has? Theres nothing wrong with the 4 speed except that its not a 5 speed.

If you have a R series motor i believe most W series transmissions will fit

I gots no truck, for now
if its not a 20R or higher engine series a 5 speed wont bolt up. i had to put a 22r into my 73 and a custom crossmember and engine mounts to get the 5 speed.

No 5 speed will bolt up to the 18r?? That doesnt make sense to me. Whatabout the 18RG, people bolt 5 speeds to those engines all the time in their celicas and stuff. Same bottom end right?

As far as I,m aware, the 18R and 20-22R bolt pattern for the bellhousings are all the same. This picture is of an older bellhousing with 18R 20R cast right into it as you can see. So bolting a 5spd in should not be a problem, as far as crossmember mount, shifter location, or driveline fitment, guess that depends on the model trans used.

Gonna give this thread a bump, i picked up a fully built 22r with a 20r head and all sorts of other goodies. It comes with a celica 5 speed. Will the stock 18r motor mounts fit the 22r? And ive already got a feeling the celica 5 speed is going to require some fabbing.

Nice bump I'm still curious about exactly what tranny would be the best option to replace my 18RC's 4 speed-cause 4500 rpm's at 75mph is just too much! I'm thinking its got to be either the W50 or the P51-The W50 was used on the 18RC celica's and P51 on the 18RG celica's. If anyone knows or has done this please advise!

To your bump question, from what I've read you will have to fabricate at least two of the mounts up front if I remember correctly, but the guy that did the swap said it wasn't major surgery as the motors are almost exactly the same size. I think he mentioned that he also had to move a crossmember for the tranny. Should be nice and fast once you get it in though.

i think you guys would be better of finding a different ratio rearend.

pretty much all the trucks prior to the 84+ models came with a 4.10 ratio rear. my 89 had a 4 speed with a 3.07 rear and it was awesome. it would run 85 mph easy.

i have a w46, and the w56 has the same ratios for 1st to 4th gear, but it has the overdrive in the .70's.

now that i've swapped a mazda rx-7 rear with 4.10's i'm looking for a w58, which is more geared for cars.

Well now I really hadn't thought along those lines before. I did with my 4x4 but it never crossed my mind with this 2 wheeler. The book says I have a 4.111 ratio. So with these older 2x4's what is the best method to accomplish this? Just find a replacement differential? Would the stock axles slide in? Where would you look for one and do you know what is compatible? Or would it be possible to find some replacement pinion or ring gears and drop them in? Admittedly I have done a lot of work on just about every part of a vehicle, but I have never rebuilt a tranny or differential. Thanks for the idea. Do you think it would be noticeably lower in torque through the lower gears?

Oh and I need to make a correction it's running around 4k at 75mph.

    BUMP!
Aloha guys, I am new to this forum and stoked there is one! Anyways I have a 69 Hilux with a 22r and going to swap a 5-speed into it as well...same questions as MERCURYMAN. Here is a link that might help us! Toyota Pickup and 4Runner Drivetrain Specifications

What I am wondering is if the splines will match up? Is the mounting point in to the cab/floor the same?

    If anyone has more pics/info?

That link doesn't go back far enough for my needs, but its good info.

I'm currently having the gears changed out on my 71, as burnzya mentioned its much easier than swapping trannys on a 8RC. From the research I did, the 8RC has a propriatry bell housing pattern and swaps can't be done with out an adapter plate.

What I need. Does anyone know the ratios of the 1971 4 speed or what the transmission code/ part number is?

I found this link (I'm sure many of you have seen it) But I don't know which one applies to my transmission.
Toyota W transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm thinking of getting gears in the 2.83 - 3.26 range. I think that will work but i'd like to calculate it out before I pull the trigger on a pricey set of gears. The OD of my wheels and tires is smaller than stock, so it exagerates the issue.

Found this. If you know what trans you have or want, (per the previous link) You can figure out your mph with this calculator. Do not enter the ":1" for any of the ratios, it screws up the calculator.

    Alright ya'll.

I've finally achieved what I wanted on my truck.

Here is a link that decodes VIN plates to let you know what gear ratio the truck came with and what ring gear size.

I went to a local salvage yard and found a set of 3.07's for my truck. I should have it all back from my gear guy tomorrow.

    Hope this helps someone.

8rc and 18rc from our trucks will definitely fit the w50 and the w55, both lower tranny bolt holes will need to be drilled to fit the two lower dowel pins on the motor.

the w58 will not WORK, to use a w58, you need to swap the bell housing from the w55 as it originally fits the 20r,22r

    To my knowledge:
    -w50 is from 20r 2wd truck/celica
-w55 is from 82-85 celica, some 2wd trucks
-w58 is from 82-85 celica SUPRA/87-up NA SUPRA/lexus IS300 etc.(best to use 82-85 celica SUPRA as they are more common in junk yards and is shorter)

My w50 on the 8rc yields around 2800-3000 at 65mph(not very accurate speedo but keeps up with traffic around that area), 4.11, 195/75-14, a lower pumpkim ratio will definitely help with freeway driving.
