Hey guys, I just picked up this truck ('88 Xtra Cab 4WD) last week and know next to nothing about Toyotas. It seems to drive -OK-, but has a hell of a time not stalling when just starting the engine after sitting for a while. I've found a handful of plugs that have no homes and I'm thinking this probably isn't a good thing. Can you guys help with identifying them and helping me find where to plug them?? See pics below. I've looked under and around and can't find where they go. Also, where can I find the engine code on this thing as I'm wondering if the previous owner changed anything...maybe this has something to do with not being able to find where they go. 1) Both of these lead to under the manifold. a) Plug with one, thick green wire that has the other end of a plug w/ no pig tails still plugged in b) 2 wires cut, one solid red, the other red/white (see top of pic) 2) Three plugs that are just chillin above the valve cover a) Brown plug with two wires b) Flat, black plug with two wires c) Round, blue plug with one wire 3) O2 sensor plug...where does this plug into?? 4) Plug on rear/top of manifold just cut off 5) Engine bay...look right? lol Where can I find the engine code? THANKS IN ADVANCE!
Im not 100% on first pics (wires that go under manifold) It could be knock sensor but Im guessing the fact that a **** TON of vacum hoses and plugs for your EFI are missing thats probably your problem as well as why it runs like crap. I will get a pic of the top of my engine valve cover and you will see what I mean. I think maybe someone might have done an EFI conversion to a carburated truck. As far as the engine code goes you should have a diagnostic plug coming off main harness from firewall to engine on pass side that you can hook up into with a jumper then watch the check engine light flash a sequence then find an online site that can tell you what that sequence means. But I'll get that pic of the engine so you can reference, I dont know exactly what it all is but you are missing it. Either that someone was trying to delete all the emmissions stuff and FKD it up.
Here is a couple of pics, if you notice you are missing the plate with the plug mounts and extensions as well as the vacuum lines. I cant tell in your photos but if you look at the 3rd one you can see there is a bunch of metal tubes mounted on side of head between head and intake that should be there as well. Hope this helps, wish I new more about it and such so hopefully someone else chimes in.
Hey thanks for the advice/pics man. It looks like most of the plugs go to that missing assembly on top of the VC. I'm assuming that's emissions stuff, so I'm not too terribly concerned w that unless it's part of the issue, which I guess it could be. The weird thing is that even with all those plugs out, I don't have any check engine light, and it really doesn't run -too- bad after the engine warms up. It's having to baby it with gas for a while until it's up to operating temp that is most bothersome. I really need to find a good manual to go over for this thing.
Yah its all emmissions stuff, you can delete it all but there is a correct way of doing it so it actually doesnt effect running ability. Theres a few block off plates and vacuum line caps that need plugged off. Kinda cleans up the engine bay without all those hoses and wires right there.
I've seen worse hack jobs than this so don't worry to much. I just looked at my truck and the only thing i can think of is in pic 4 which seems to be a temp sensor for the egr. Everything I've seen looks to be emissions/egr crap so it can be deleted and corrected easily. As for the having to baby the gas until it is at operating temp I'm thinking that sounds like a cold start valve which might be the 3 wires that are cut in the first pic.
