At the college i have access to a hot tank? or high pressure parts cleaner?

ive never used one or even seen one until i asked my instructor the other day if we had one, i went and looked at it, its just a big container that has high pressure sprayers inside, so its not submerged in anything, just like a giant steam cleaner is what it looks like.

Is it ok to do this to a transmission, the only thing im worried about is the internals and anything rusting, i opened up the transmission and drained it... probably hasnt been opened since 74 lol.

Should i leave it empty, clean it, then replace the gear oil?

Im taking a bunch of parts in monday because the last week we get like a free week and this would be a awesome opportunity before summer, to get this tranny looking like new.

any comments help, thank you in advance!

I wouldnt do it to a trans. If you have the skill pull the case off it and wash that but washing the whole trans you could get the solvent in seals and cause issues with internals and rust.

If ya want pressure wash it, just dont spray the shifter tower, output and input shaft area's all crazy.

DO NOT put the trans in there whole.

You can't seal it up enough to keep the solvent out of the openings if it's worth anything as a hot tank (had one at my school too). If you want to use it, split the case and put the case sections in there minus the center plate and all the bits attatched to it. remove every single bit from the case that you can (wire clips, drain/fill plug, vent thingie, etc). You can leave the trans 90% assembled minus the case (remember the nightmares when you show up to school naked?)

Course if you mean the auto trans, that's a little harder. again, don't put it in the tank whole, take it apart to do it. can't just skin the auto like the manual tho.
