    Hello,

Has anyone put a 2JZ into a 1971 Hi Lux? Just wondering if it's possible.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Anything is possible...I don't think it has been done though. The entire firewall would be moved back and that doesn't leave a lot of room for people.

really? hmm... i'm thinking about trying to stuffing a twin turbo motor into early 72 truck. hopefully just the center portion of the firewall needs to be modified. i really don't want to move the pedal assembly.

another concern is fitting the intercooler, intake and turbos. the good thing is the tranny should go in without cutting. we not too sure about moving the shifter opening. putting a r154 instead w series.

you are going to have problems with the shifter and your seats. The transmissions are so long ( im assuming you are useing an v160 ) the shifter might be back in the middle of a bench seat. Also to fit the intercooler and radiator for that thing you are going to need about 4-5 inches infront of the 29 inch long motor, measure your engine bay and see if it fits. :)

i tried to put a 2jz in a 65 stout, it would have fit but its a little bigger of a truck.

edit: its like trying to put 10lbs of poop in a 5lb bag, you can do it, but its gonna get messy :)

here is some pics of my 1uz sitting in my 73 stock engine bay for reference. the bay should be about the same size as your 71, but the 1uz is 2 cylinders shorter then the 2jz..

the radiator originally mounts the the back side of the core support

there was no room for a radiator or fan, so i made a core support that moved the radiator forward 3". it would not work with the stock grille either.

even moving the radiator forward 3" barely leaves enough room for electric fans. they'll only clear the pulley by about 1/8"

with the jz you'll be cutting several inches into the cab, and like dillinja said your shifter will most likely be sitting somewhere in the area of the bench seat. i'd honestly recommend going with a v-6 or v-8. the later model trucks barely have room for a jz swap and their engine bays are way longer then on the early lux's.

that's really cool putting the 1 uz into a 73. since you moved the core support that far are you going to be able to close the hood?

hmm... oh well i was hoping someone has done it before. i'm just being cheap and lazy. i had this motor for another project but plans have changed. so instead of looking around for another motor and trans. to replace the 18rc. i'm thinking about putting this 2j into this truck.

the good thing is the trans i have is a r154. so the shifter is around 4" forward then the 6 speed. we'll see what happens. plus i have bucket seats and i'm only 5' 6". another thing is i'm ok with cutting. the plan is to pull it to torc show in long beach with the motor, trans and intercooler mounted in the truck or if possible drive it there. i know it's not going to be easy. even small things like i just got a set of those belltech mighty max springs with this extra weight in the front now what happens. we'll see if it makes it. lol

How much hp does that motor put out? cause if that motor is built lily it looks its like a 10k motors probably around 800 hp plus. An r154 goes pop around 500, with marlin crawler mods 600. Putting a 2jz in anything and the words cheap should not be in the same sentence. I really hope you make it fit, would be sick. Can we get some more pics of that motor and some specs on it?

i don't know how much this motor will put out. hopefully this motor will make some power. the long block should be able to handle more then what those hks gt2835 turbos could produce. we put in cp pistons (1 mm oversized, raised the comp to 9:1), carrillo rods h beam, stock stroke, titan forge main caps, hks 272 cams, hks cam gears, portflow head, with 1mm oversized valves. the r154 has marlin crawler internals with os giken triple disc clutch. luckily the factory axles seem to be pretty thick. did a minor shortening job. cut off 2.25" on both sides. before you say it... i know this motor is too much for this truck. it was built to be in another car but, i changed the direction for that car. i'm just being lazy and i didn't want to try to sell the 2j in this economy. plus i'm being cheap because i didn't spend money on another motor to replacing the 18rc. (noticed how cheap and 2 jz was not in the same sentence? lol) hopefully we could get this motor to fit into the truck. i will try get some good pics of this project.

Where do you live? My first thought was to recommend a 3s-gte, but then I say you had the 2j...

damn. this truck is getting complicated but, it should be out at torc. we put in those belltech mighty max springs and 69 camaro struts / shocks. the suspension is way too soft. (without the motor installed) once the 2j get put in there the front suspension will be fully compressed. i was thinking about those qa1 coil overs but those bolts on the bottom of the strut are so small. switching to coil over will put so much more stress on those bolts. does anyone want to buy the belltech mighty max springs and kyb 69 camaro struts?

thanks! the build is coming along slowly. ordered the radiator stuff. has anyone put a radiator under the bed of a truck? i'm just wondering if anyone has ran into any difficulties or has any tricks. that's just a 6" thick intercooler in the pic. no room for a radiator. lol

thinking the alum. piping under the truck will help cool the coolant as well as the radiator. we are using a inline pump after the radiator make sure there is enough water pressure. the biggest challenge was trying to fit a really thick intercooler (6" thick) in the front of the truck. i really hope to drive this truck to this years jccs show. we will see.
