So I recently purchased a 1986 Toyota 4x4 from a buddy for $900. It has a carbureated 22R(E?) with A/C. I have plenty of long range plans for this little truck, but my immediate concerns are as follows: 1) The A/C has nothing, the fan doesn't even turn on when I flip the switch. I'm hoping it's something as simple as the fuse, but I'm wondering if I might need a new A/C control unit. Anyone know? 2) I'm in the process of pulling the engine for a rebuild, and I'm wondering who makes the best complete rebuild kit for under $350 or so? 3) I know these things aren't torque monsters, but what is the best camshaft choice for a little extra low to mid torque? I'm going to use the truck for mild 4wheeling and maybe a little sand dune action. This is my first Toyota, well, really my first foreign made vehicle and most of my wrenching experience is from Fords, with a couple of GM vehicles thrown in there. I'm not sure what to look out for, or any brand secrets or pecadilloes that may arise. Any advice or suggestions would be great.
one major thing you have to watch out for........... it will outlast any of the ford or chevys you have had. (i own fords and chevys)
ok to answer if ur truck is a 22r or re, its a 22R, the carbs were just Rs, RE was for fuel injection. U would be surprised just how much torque these trucks do put out, my first 86 made 123 ft. lbs torque on a engine with over 200k miles, stock it was supposed to have 125 ft lbs. For the rebuild i cant really say for under $350. But the best thing would be to call lc engineering and ask them what cam they recommend. I couldnt say for ur A/C as i ripped my first one out..
I second that.... Get the rebuild kit and cam from engnbldr. When you want real performance though go through lc engineering. But, LC=$$$$
lc is only a reseller, a lil bit of reasearch can save you 50%+ from what they charge. and you will get customer service in the deal too. x3 on the engnbldr id recomend a moderate cam, weber 32/36 and a doug thorley tri-y header. if you can find one offenhauser made a dual plane intake for the 22r, it is freakin awesome. and all of these upgrades can pass smog checks if you want. think of these motors as half a chev 350 but without the leaky valve cover
With pic Well, it's not big block torque, but it ought to be good enough to get a light little truck like this moving! Engnbldr was recommended by another forum as well, and it looks like they have a pretty good setup. As far as the $350, I just meant an all inclusive cam chain, piston/ring, gaskets, etc. Most of the machining I can do myself and the head was recently rebuilt. I haven't pulled the valve cover off to look at what all they did because I want to get thet motor on a stand and in my garage before I even mess with it. I thought about trying to swap in efi, but the weber setups look pretty good. It was suggested that the on/off switch itself may be the cause of my A/C troubles. Gotta have it, I live in Yuma, AZ, and it only gets about 120 here in the summer! All in time, I guess. Anyway, heres a picture of the thing as it sits, leaking oil on my wife's rocks. i have yet to see any hating on 4x4's with this site. just as long as its yota! looks like a nice truck. i've lived in arizona my whole life and when i think of yuma i think of sand and an air force base. never even thought of there being housing developments.
Yeah, that's what I used to think too. I'm from San Diego originally and I used to go shoot .22s with my Grandfather on the peice of desert where my neighborhood is. It's still the middle of nowhere, though!
