Yuu got the same truck as me I think most american built toys have a 5 speed, because three of my friends have jap made trucks and they are 4 speed, most guys i know with american built toys have 5 speed. Im probably wrong though.
I have a japanese 88 and two 89's they are all 4 speed. 89 is the last year for the 4 speed. I would much rather have a five speed though
Yeah pretty much what they said because mine is japanese built since the vin starts with a J and mjne is a 4 speed which I hate because I cant go that fast in it
I hated my 4 speed, it would top out at like 90. with my w58 I know Ive hit 115 which I dont think anyone should be doing in these trucks lol
From what I've experienced geological location also plays a part in what transmission/rear axle final gear combo came in these trucks... No freeways on Guam and 55 being the fastest speed limit doesn't require 5 speeds unlike the mainland... What's good is they are interchangeable and bolt on somewhat between the two.

The 4 speed was stock in the 1 ton trucks since they came with 3.07's to make up for the lack of overdrive. 5 speeds were the norm for all the light duty trucks with 7.5" rear diffs. You could get a 4 speed standard cab truck up into the 90's with a 4 speed and carb.
are the diff gear ratios different too? any one know what the stock gear ratio is for an american made 87?
