Well I have a LCE and I like it. There some one eBay I think there pasesetters, there not bad.
Look on Craigslist for headers to. I got my LCE on Craigslist for 150 and it was new. The guy sold the truck so the header was just set in the shop

I'm running the Doug Thorley 542Y headers. It has all the smog hookups needed if that's the route you want to go. Here in CA, all smog/emissions are required. Looking at their website, I can't believe how much the prices have jumped. Back in '90, I bought mine for $200.00

Yup! You'll run into clearance problems with some of the aftermarket headers out there such as the Pacesetter and the LCE. Doug Thorley is a perfect fit with no modifications & clearance issues.

I think the guy that I got them ordered the wrong one even tho it's a 20r I talked to LCE an they said they don't have a bolt on header for a 80 2wd the one I have is really short and hugs the frame

Correct and Doug Thorley will also supply one. I placed my C.A.R.B sticker on the "connector" to the air cleaner. Luckily, my smog guy knows me because I'm a repeat customer so my visual goes by fast.

so based on experience, what kind of power increases are you guys seeing with a good header and possibly a weber 32/36?

I currently have a lot more than just a header, but when I had only: header
    cam
    Valve springs
    flow through cat
    K& N filter
The power increase was very noticeable!!

So, besides my Doug Thorley headers, I running an LCE street cam, 32/36 Weber, Flowmaster with high flow cat, MSD 6A, and advanced timing. All of these as a whole package provide you with a noticeable power increase.

    Loaded question...

One one hand if you have a bone stock engine with old failing exhaust and carb and you swap on a weber and a header with all new larger exhaust sure it'll make a huge difference in power and general driveability.

On the other by the time you drop a grand or so on all new partake you'd be light years ahead to just save your nickels and buy a complete rz series and swap it in. Even a stock 2rz will woop up on a mild r series.

My advice is to either buy stuff used or do an engine swap. My 78 has a decent 20/22r with a side draft, nice cam and Lce pro header but rather than toss more money down that hole its getting a 1uz. 250 hp and the same weight... Win/win.
