What's a good transmission to swap to in are trucks and how would I go on finding out what trans I have ?

what are the spec's of your truck? this chart will get you close if not correct Toyota Pickup and 4Runner Drivetrain Specifications

 

there should be a tag on your door jamb that tells you your trans and axle codes.

i have a w46 4 speed, and found that a w56 has the exact same ratios in the first 4 gears, but has the 5th gear overdrive.

i'd still like to find a w58 though
