Okay so I am looking to buy either a used or rebuilt 22re long block since mine took a toll on me after over 300k and who knows what was done to it from the previous owner. Recently the motor started knocking and the next day I checked to see where it was coming from and I assumed it was from the block. Drove it to pick up my son from school and on the way home it lost power and then died. I'm thinking I spun a rod bearing but there's no exact telling without taking a close look inside. About a year ago or roughly 20k miles ago it blew a head gasket and so I got a head job done job by SD Yota along with replacing many other components. So I have been looking for a replacement since I need it to be back up and running asap and I found a rebuild long block on CL for sale for about $890 with core exchange from a guy out in Perris, Ca. The shop is called Quimura engines? That's about the cheapest I found for a "like brand new 22re with 0 miles." $1170 without a core which I might as well keep. I figure I can keep it and rebuild it myself to gain more experience and knowledge taking it apart and back together. Other 22re's I see range from $1600 and up. Anyone know a good place in California preferably socal to get a used or rebuilt 22RE or any other suggestions?
the lessons i learned from replacing my engine a few years ago is ask the builder/seller lots of questions about where the work is done, what work is done, what parts are used, and that it also pays off to spend more up front and dont buy the cheapest you can find. the place i got my engine from Kar King Auto, Engines and Transmissions Specialist (cheapest i could find) used the crappiest gaskets and i had to redo the head gasket, rear main and a few others in less then 10k. they also wouldnt honor the warranty because they said a certified tech didnt install it which was BS, it just wasnt the shop they wanted me to use.
I rebuilt mine last year when i enrolled in the engines class at the local community college. saved a ton on machining costs. I'm now in the process of rebuilding a 7M to go in my truck I'm up north from you in Orange. Lmk if you wanna check out the motor. My cousin lives in SD so i frequent the area. -Chris 714 747 1581
So I checked it out, the motor has a definate rod knock..... Along with other interesting noises... Lol. In his best interest and down time conciousness, a fresh long block with at least a one year warranty is his best option for the buck.
honestly if you can have the truck down for a few more days just rebuild it, use good quality parts and save yourself a ton of money.
I believe cost would be about the same if not more if I rebuild myself. Cost of parts plus taking certain things to the machine shop to get taken care of. Now if I had the equipment a machine shop has then I'd probably save.
rebuild kit 300 100 to turn crank 60 to recondition rods 80 to bore block if it needs it your looking at way less then 800 bucks to do it on your own with quality parts.
Heres another place. I got a new head from them for $250 so they do got good prices. p.s. The heads might be made in china if they are new. not sure on that though.
For the guys that are recommending 22reperformance.com have you guys ordered a motor from them and if not why them? Just trying to shop smart.
ill get the info from my buddy. but theres a place up here in the LA AREA (compton)that sells long blocks. i wanna say 650. dont hold me to it. but ive known a few people that bought from them. no problems at all.
