Okay so I finally got my chance to do a 1jz swap. Currently Im looking in ebay for an engine. My question is, since being here I see alot with great experience and want to ask is there anywhere else one would suggest to look for these motors? I shop ebay alot but never spent over $1200 let alone 3k.
What can I look for as far as precautions etc? Any information is appreciated. Mahalo and Aloha.

first off you need a rear sump swap. the stock twins fit but are very close to the firewall (may need a hammer) going single is good idea for the fit just add about $400-$500. the wiring harness is also to short so youll have to make it longer and merge it with your stock harness so everything works... also if your not going to make your own mounts then BIC Performance sells them ( BIC Performance Products ) much worth it i have them also. then you have to ask yourself auto and 5speed the auto is only good to about 300hp the 5speed (R154) is much stronger(up to 500 stock) the w58 is also a good tranny but again not as strong as the R. Then the radiator needs to be up graded and and the radiator support needs to be cut so your swap fits in.... there is more i just cant think right now lol pm me if you need more info

Thanks bro really appreciate the info. Ive been researching for some time now and did find out about the rear sump oil pan for clearance, also I recently found out about the motor and trans mounts which will be very helpful... almost as if swapping to another 22r in a sense of it fitting with the adapters rught?
What I was looking to get was a twin turbo 1jz (seems its the only one avail. with a r154) and the single turbo I found has an auto tranny which I dont want anyways, I LOVE standard!...not to sound gay but sounds better then "stick" lol.
Thanks for giving me some valuable tips and good info on the differences of trans. (assumed r154 was best) and also about the radiator support. Also on the wires Ive heard someone mention getting adapters for that as well but still needs to look into and thanks for the heads up on wires being short. I have a guy who will wire it up and set up the intercooling/piping but not sure if he knew we'd need to extend them, hope he can pull it off tho Im confident in his work.
I do have other question such as,

Ignitor chip? Is it a 2 part where it needs ignitor and ignitor chip? or is a 1 peice type deal?

Rear end? I understand I could weld the diff. and get the "front" of the drive shaft (r134) to mate to the stock 22r's drive shaft "end". Will this be sufficient or do others use a completely different rear end?

What to look for as for a good or bad motor? I understand it's hard to tell but Ill be buying from overseas and the best I can do from here is check sellers feedback, thats about all I can see from my end besides pics.

I just want to be sure Im prepared for it cause its not as if I can drive back to the seller so all advice, info and tips is greatly appreciated.
As it is Im looking at spending around $2800 for:
    Engine
    5speed transmission r154
    Engine Control Unit (ECU)
    complete uncut engine wiring
    turbo manifold
    Intake Manifold
    Exhaust Manifold
    Injectors
    Fuel Rail
    Power Steering Pump
    A/C Compressor
    Alternator
    ignitor chip
    map sensor
    clutch
    flywheel
    pressure plate

Not sure what else Ill need besides the driveshaft, mount adapters and the above mentioned radiator etc. Again any info is greatly appreciated thank you very much.

Also switch over to 2jz water pump especially if your using electric cooling fans ,you might as well do the timing, check driftmotion.com I got all my stuff there and they have fast shipping to.

Thank you very much and will look into it, appreciate the advice. I was thinking of wether or not to do the timing or a full overhaul but a full overhaul is not anywheres near my budget one I start to invest in the motor and misc. parts necessary. So you sugg. to go with electric fans and 2jz water pump, would that be best to do or would the original fan suffice? Mahalo and Aloha in advance.

Jus remember dont skimp on parts and you cant really have a budget on this kind of swap, expect to spend bout 5-6k and thats just to get you going and thats not even included upgrades so make sure this is what you want. Im over 4500 on my 1j and still have alot to buy.

As far as what I post'd with what will be included with the purchase, is there anything else Id need to buy to get it running? Im still wondering about things like an ignitor chip... is there an ignitor to go with that that I may need to buy??? cause it doesnt say so Im just wondering as Im not familiar.

Damn Jctoy, so since your in it around 4500 was this price with motor included? If so how much did you get the motor for?

Wordtothmothership, so 2jz water pump and pulley, then the rear end, I understand you said theres many options (sorry so noob) but what other options are there besides the ford 8.8 you mentioned are there?

I contact the seller and asked for a compression test video, he mentioned that it was said to be around 150psi, is that average or rather on the low side? Ive seen some videos with some around 175psi, just want to know soon cause Im about to make the purchase as soon as possible if all checks out.
Thanks for the help guys, seriously want to do this so your answers are invaluable to me and I greatly appreciate it, Aloha.

you'll need a 255lph fuel pump. i did a 1uz swap and have it running at about $2500. still need a driveshaft but thats about it. i believe you'll need an intercooler and the plumbing too.

i frequented a jz swap site (don't think it's around anymore) and there was a thread about cost to do the jz swap. a lot of people were saying it's a $10k swap to get it running and reliable.

10k... my dream was becoming a reality lol. I think Ill go ahead and get the reality of it started. Good call on the fuel pump and the intercooler dont look too expensive either. Although Im still not sure if 150psi is good or on the lower side since Ive seen some with 175psi. Thanks for the info B.

Yah Jctoy I understand those parts needed adds up and right now I have that chance to make it happen so I want to go ahead. 5 to 6k is okay as long as its running reliably.
Ill consider upgrades later but for now I am mainly looking for reliability.

Again does anyone know if 150psi on a compression test would be good or is that on a lower side??? If its the lower then Ill wait for a better one with better compression.

Kind of in a bind. I didnt consider the 1jz vvti but now Im wondering if that would be a better route. I see one for 3k and it has a front sump. Can a front sump 1jz vvti engine be converted to rear sump just by buying a rear sump oil pan?
Cant find a single turbo 1jz with manual trans except for this one with front sump and its a vvti so dont know what to do. Please inform me cause I really want to make this build but with the right choices the first time. Thank you all in advance.

YEAH IT ADDS UP!!!!!! And I recommend staying away from the VVTI stuff. When toyota implemented the vvti the weakened the internals. Still will suport a good amount of power on stock internal but not as much as the Non VVTI. Now this is just info I got from the supra guys. Now for you what every one is saying stuff adds up. You will need: motor, trans, driveshaft, rear-end, Wiring harness, ecu/piggyback, TIME!!!, and all the small parts. As far as my feelings are is that once you fix on thing there is another thing that breaks. I really know this cuz living it right now lol.

Things to look out for..... JDM motors tend to have blown/ bad turbos. Plan to have them/ it rebuilt or replaced with a better single turbo.

And by all means check out my build and rodney's build. I bought my truck from him and been upgrading it like crazy.

    Rodney's build: http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/build-up-project-threads-25/rajzswap-official-build-thread-6358/

My build is in my sig

Thank you very much Matt, you just took alot off my shoulders on deciding. Now its clear to get a non vvti jz.
I definately hear what you're saying about the additional costs. Big thanks on your opinion/facts about JDM and on that note can the twin turbo be downgraded to single? (never had a turbo before and sorry for such questions). I definately want to go with a single from what Ive been reading it seems its alot easier and in some cases alot better overall.
Definately gonna look into yours and Rods build and thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
Apprecaite the tips Matt cause I am ready to buy but needed more info. Been watching alot of 1jz swap build videos (mostly racing/pedal mashing not the actual swap) and been FEENING to do mines so Im deffinately gonna do it just need a good motor to choose. Thanks again Matt.

Ok, before this rumor gets rolling again... Non-turbo VVTi rods ARE lighter and weaker. TURBO rods are the same - both VVTi and non VVTi.

With that in mind, in stock form the VVTi 1JZ makes peak torque a full 2K rpm sooner than the non VVTi.

Choosing between VVTi and non just depends on your ultimate power goals. If you want 300-350hp with a killer torque curve and great driveability, go VVTi. But if you want any more than 400, save yourself the hassle and extra tuning $$ and just start out with the non VVTi.

AS far as oil pans go, any turbo rear sump pan will fit whether its 1JZ or 2JZ. Just make sure you get the 2 piece pan, oil pickup, and if you are going non VVTi and stock twins, the oil return lines from the turbos are different for front vs rear sump.

Okay so I dont think I may want/need more than 400hp but would prefer that option to be accessable so a non vvti looks to be a better choice.
As for getting a motor with a front sump, Id be able to swap to a rear sump with the r/sump kit but the return lines would be different? What would make this swap work/complete other than just buying the kit? Are the lines something small to change? Again please excuse my noob ?'s not familiar and 1st time trying this.
And Lastly can I change the stock twins to single and what takes place?
I still habe yet to look at Matt and Rods build, will check it out later tonight. Thanks again Twin Turbo Taco.

The return lines are just a little bit different, and wouldn't be too hard to redo if you cant easily find the correct ones. Once you go single, you will have to make your own anyways.

If sticking with non-VVTi, just hold out for a rear sump to save yourself the trouble.

Also - on the R154, make sure its from a Supra and not a Soarer. If you get a Soarer one your shifter is gonna sit behind you, lol

    You want this R154:

    Not this one:

Plus the Supra tranny is cheaper.
