does anyone know the size difference between a stock shifter and a short shifter? or just the length of a stock one? i read a short shifter i believe is 12inches. any advice would be appreciated. thanks
FYI, short shifter's don't reference the length of the actual shifter itself but the actual "throw" of the shift. Meaning shorter travel length between gear's or shift points. Hope this helps. And usually OEM shifter vs aftermarket short shifter are generally the same length.
Yeah short throw shifters mean there is less travel, but I know you can get some shorter length shift arms someplace, I remember someone talking about them. Wanna say someone said it was off a celica or something? Don't quote me on that so wait for someone else to chime in.
one of the downfalls of shortening the gear stick is selector issues, it makes it far harder on the synchro rings and the quicker shift can allow for the selector in the gearbox to jam between gears. forgive me i am australian and so i know things by different names. one common downfall is when shifting from 2nd to 3rd the selector in the gearbox slips back into 2nd and yet the gear stick is stuck in the neutral position between 3rd,4th,5th and reverse. this is a common problem and in the early corolla five speed gearboxes a hole had to be cut into the alloy casing to be able to lever the selector out of 2nd and let the gear stick be able to move in neutral freely. other wise on the early toyota floor shift gearbox to shorten the the gear stick length we would just twist them off, as the main part of the gear stick was just glued on or rubber bonded leaving a gear shift of around 3 inches long and a golf ball with a hole drilled in it as the knob. with most of the newer gear boxes to get them out of being stuck in 2nd it is only the gear stick that needs to be removed and the selectors are clearly seen, some got stuck in reverse.
I've been running a LC short throw shifter for more than a few years now, & can tell you there are no problems with it & the throw is a big difference from stock!!
I have cut the shift handles off of many transmissions and shortened them with zero issue. My last set was on my wheeler. I used an 8" long 1/2" bolt with the head removed on the trans and 6" bolts on the t cases. On my 78 I have swapped between the stock w58 and w50 shifters. I need to modify one of my W50 handles so I can build a short throw spacer for it.
Like said by others,it's the throw inside the top of the trans that changes ,not the length of the shaft. Between gear changes is much quicker!!
I have the lc, and couldn't be happier!!! I would weld the extension on instead of using the set screws though.
Short shifter= shifter cut down to be short. (ricer/hillbilly) short throw shifter=shifter with different geometry to give shorter shift throws. (real thing) Yes, short throw shifters can cause problems. For one: sure the throws are short but you still have the same synchros inside the trans.
I have seen and experienced short shifters trashing transmissions specifically third gear if you only get on it and dog it on a blue moon your fine and there great but it you hotrod and rip gears and rubber it will cost you short shifters ruin gear synchronize
