ok i have a 1989 toyota pickup fuel injected.....now i have pretty much replaced everything and i still have problems!!! the motor is new... when i say new i mean everything complete over haul didnt even use old block or head i took my TRD cam out everthing stock besides my LC headers ok ....here we go...... my ilde is crazy never consistent either high or low and goes up and down like its a vac. leak or wont ever idle at all.... now i have replace the air flow meter (check engine led me to that),did vac leak check, egr semi clean out(worked for a few days then back to problems!!!!) now another problem.... in stop in go traffic i will heat up or long periods of idling i did the ford taurus 2speed fan mod (low speed for now) not new radiator but have only had it for year or so same with water pump and yes it a toyota one (thoses two about the only to things i didnt replace cause wasnt that old)...i also bought a 180 temp thermostat (a few weeks ago new from toyota) i also replaced my adjustable thermo switch to a non adjustable 185 temp thermo switch....now heres the really weird thing i have a mis fire that was even happening with the old motor not big kind suddle and when im driving it will studder somtimes and twice it had died on the freeway completely pulled over checked out everthing made sure everything was tight got back in the truck started right up!!!! i see that my ignitior is a little corroded (only happen twice so far) now i know the the heating might be because of flow or clog and just maybe my timing skipped a tooth but i have did alot and tried alot of stuff my brain is warpped at this time...if anyone got some insight or anything that would be cool... and anyone in the so cal area that know they way around the motor really good let me know i know there might be some stuff i have left out but i will add accordingly... whew... that was alot of info!!!! LOL!!
hmm..the idleing part might be that ur distrubutor is 180 out. have u check it with a timing light so see where it is on the timing mark? i will think more on what the idling problem is...the heating problem is probly a clog radiator. have it flushed. im not sure running a clompletly stock intake with a header is helping, but call lc engineering and ask about that as i have mostly only dealt with carb. also did u route ur stock vac lines correctly? this is not to make u see like u dont knwo what ur doing, just the things i can think off the top of my head to help out. as i have built a 20r/22r motor and have had similair probs with my stock one before i pulled it out.
The erratic idle, up and down sounds like the idle speed is set too high, they will fluxuate like that on the EFI engines. If the distributor was 180 out as suggested the engine wouldn't even run Heating up could be a partially plugged radiator, or not enough air flow with the electric fan. The miss is hard to say, plug wires, coil, moisture in the fuel, how longs it been since the fuel filter was changed? signal generator in the distributor, have seen those go bad and cause the engine to quit then restart after cooling off. Theres a few ideas to help in your search, good luck.
Ok I work at a Dodge dealership as a mech and I have seen alot of radiators come in. Ok now your probably not gonna want to hear this but ( when I say this I am being 100% serious ) your gonna need to get a new radiator. See the problem is there is something that is in the coolant these days that causes the radiators to clog. Like I said no B.S the chemical balance make up in the coolant is causing the radiator to clog up with a sandy brown or chocolate brown I guess you can call it sludge. What I have learned is that no matter how many times you flush the radiator its is still gonna be partially clogged. The way to check is start your truck let it heat up like normal. Then get out and check your radiator feel the top hose then the bottom. Both are gonna get hot, now feel the radiator at the top it should feel warm now feel the very bottom if its clogged like I described then the bottom is gonna be cool maybe slightly warm.
cool......thanks for the replies...ok i did change the fuel filter with the new motor, im using toyota red coolent, the radiator is not even a year old but yet i do understand it can get clogged again..... i have less than 5k on new motor but i will check again on ever aspect thanks again guys.....keep em coming!!!!
I wouldn't think the radiator if only a year old or less would be plugged unless your using some really hard water in it. I might be suspect to the thermostat operating correctly, some 180 units are late opening, or more suspect of the electric fan if only operating in low, that its not pulling enough air. Another idea, does the temp go up and down kinda erratic, spitting water into the overflow tank? if so possible head gasket leaking.
im voting for a bubble in the coolant system. would make a lot of sensors very unhappy and could cause overheating at idle.
That would be the crappy dex cool coolant causing those issues, regular green coolant and toyota red will not cause those issues.
Idle going up & down on a 22RE can be a bad thermostat, engine doesn't come out of cold start, fuel is being injected into the engine! Also will kill the cat!
thermostat is new on my 2nd one...the coolent im using is toyota red, cat i punched out thinking it might have something to do with heating (clogged up ect.) bubbles in the cooling huh i thought i got it pertty clear but whats the for sure way to make sure there's no air pockets or bubbles in the system? is there a bleed valve on the block like hondas?
