I just wanted to pick everyone's brains (those willing, of course) as to what route you guys would go between the two choices:

79'-83' Toyota Pickup 5-speed transmission. Mileage unknown. $350. 90-Day Warranty.

    ...or....

79'-83' Toyota Pickup 5-speed transmission. Rebuilt. $750. 1-Year Warranty. New bearings, new seals, everything else mearsured and changed if necessary WITH OEM Toyota parts and NOT aftermarket.

I know this may seem like a stupid question, but bare with me for a moment and entertain my question. Note, these are transmissions that were pulled off pickup trucks of the above specified years, and not out of any other vehicles.

    Thanks for your time.

Hey bro I would go with the 90 day warranty trans. Just make sure it's in good condition. Make sure there are no grinds.:)

Hey but if you have the money to spend get the rebuilt one. :D

But heres a link on the different transmissions. Check what trans you are buying.

Not sure if I want to admit this.....but I run used W58s on my turbo car. (There, I said it  ) The first one was the original from the car, with about 120,00 miles on it when I went turbo. I changed it when the rear bearing went, it worked until it came out. The second one is from another Celica and is standing up fine.

    And I DO beat them.

Toyota builds tough trannies, if the 90 day unit lasts that long, it will probably last a good long time.

I wouldn't buy either for those prices, unless it includes installation...

Widen up your search years bro... Any "W" series box from '79-'95 will fit... Just remember you also need the trans mount cross member bracket for the 5speed.

Check out your local pick a part yards... I'm sure you can pick one up for under $200 bones!

Look here to: www.car-part.com you can do a nation wide or local search. All the big yards across the mainland are tied into the system...

    Here's a sample search for a 94 model. I don't know your zip so I used 90210! :D They have some listed for 250...

Just wanted to thank you guys for your opinions.

Basically this guy who has been trying to get at my younger sister heard that I was really in love with my truck, yadda, yadda, yadda....

Well, he works at a shop that has a 79' pickup his boss got on a lien sale, I guess. For whatever reason they parted the truck out and whether to win brownie points or not - this kid says he can try to get me a deal from his boss.

    Etc. Etc.

Anyhow that was what his boss offered. Obviously not much of a deal. So I was just curious what you guys thought between the two offers. Doesn't necessarily mean I was only limiting myself to them, but it was offered......

...and what the hell do I know, this is my first time hunting for a 5-speed for my very first Toyota pickup. :)

Thanks, again, for your time and opinions.

im proud to admit that EVERY tranny i run is used and has more the 150k on it. and im REALLY hard on em. have broke one yet.

like using reverse and the gas pedal as brake

id look on craigslist in your area, bet you can get one for $50-100 and most any 2xr type tranny will fit with minor mods.

I have a later 5-speed. It will bolt up, but the shifter is back farther since it kicks back, rather than being straight like the early transmissions. I'm about 90 minutes from you.
