I'm fixing up my 91 PU.Nothing major needs to be done.Mostly just routine stuff.I'm considering how far I should go after the more basic mechanical stuff is taken care of.There is a fair amount of rust on most of the body parts and underside but it still runs great.Anyway I'd like to know about how many miles others have on their's before the more costly repairs started cropping up.
welcome to the site. I don't know how different the engines are for different years but, here's some history on my 84 FI 22RE 265,000 miles head gasket-140,000 master brake cylinder- 150,000 timing chain- 179,000 thermostst- 189,000 water pump- 200,000 radiator-210,000 starter/alternator- 218,000 my oil pan gasket needs to be changed and possibly the tranny rear seal. My valves could be adjusted. other than that it's been pretty good, it's a Toyota.
man ive got 245000 on my 85 with a 22r and all ive done is replaced a head gasket and radiator. My truck still runs like a champ with plenty of power for a 22r and gets 25-28mpg to boot...these trucks are rock solid, thats why we love em........i would sell my 2000 tacoma 10 times befor i would sell my 85
230k, got it at 220k. I've done clutch, radiator, and timing set as far as engine stuff. I doubt much of anything was done before that. it may or may not have had gaskets and seals done but it doesn't leak a drop of oil (which is more than I can say for any previous vehicle) rust related I've done exhaust and replaced the fuse box and ECU (rusted through wheel well/cab behind each of them and then corroded them)
my '89 has 240k and i have owned it for 3 yrs and i all i have done other than routine maint was replaced alt and timimg chain tensioner.
Honestly it highly depends on how the previous owners maintained it. Ive had cars/trucks with near 500,000 miles on the original engine and Ive had some that have 150,000 on their 3rd engine. If previous maintnence was not kept up and the vehicle was driven hard or treated poorly this leaves the potential for more mechanical parts to wear down and break faster. You also get what you pay for and try to find out what the previous owner had to do to it. I got nearly 200,000 on my 91 at the moment. I can tell the previous owners cared for it because it is very sound and everything is very clean and maintained. They also gave me all the receipts for work done and the most major repair it has had so far is a new water pump and alternator. I am going to tear the engine down this next spring and rebuild it just for my own reasons (show season puts a ton of miles on this thing I need to know its gonna make the distance)
I'm the original owner and I've always taken good care of it.Only about 140 thou on it.So long as nothing to costly pops up I plan to keep it even though I plan to get something else in a couple years. Those new 40+ mpg cars are mighty tempting. My folks just got one a 2011 Fiesta last month.Nice little car.
Mine is at 185000. For the 4 years lol I think it's time to do some gaskets an maybe the timing chain guides just so it'll last some more time but she runs fine for a 91 an I get great mileage still
