Hi guys, I've posted on here a couple times but ive used the search button to try to find some answers and I just have a couple questions to clear this all up.. I have a 94 single cab 2wd 5speed with a freshly rebuilt 22re.. I mostly drive my truck around town an very rarely have the need to get it over 70 or 75 mph and I want to add some power to it and possibly change the gearing in the rear end to give it more lower end pull... Basically i just wanna make it more fun to drive around town.. Does anyone see any problems with running a new header, 2 1/2 inch piping to new exhaust, short throw shifter, battery relocate, short ram intake, ngk plugs an wires, and maybe shorter gears in the rear end?? Any input would be appreciated.. The motor is completely stock an this my first attempt at adding performance parts.. If y'all see any problems with this or see something I missed please let me know!! Thanks guys
you really wont see much power gain from any of that stuff other then the gear change and the header. you could do a cam but you basically have to remove the cylinder head to install it.
I agree. I wouldn't even go with the 2 1/2" exhaust. 2 1/4" is plenty big enough. I ran a 2.5 a while ago and lost a noticeable amount of torque. When I redid it after bagging the truck, I got it back with a 2 1/4"... The removal of the stock air box did seem to make a difference though, and I've dropped to 4.10 gears.
I like where you are going with the plan. I wanted a bit more performance as well. You know what I did? Installed a limited slip diff. Check these links out. I used a Eaton Detroit Tru Trac 7.5 inch unit Tacoma 2wd limited slip... do they exist? - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board Toyota Gear Swap Tech It made my truck so much more fun to drive!
How hard is it to install a cam? Could I do it or would I have to take it to a shop? And is there a write up on the battery relocate and short ram intake project? I had some questions about some of that... Would 4.10 gears be suitable for the minor highway driving I do? And the short shifter and plugs and wires were really just little add ons I want ha
that'll make the truck fun to drive around the city. intake/ battery location swap will help since the intake's routing is significantly shorter than running across the engine bay, BUT, you need to find a way to duct cold air TO the passenger side where the air intake will be.
I can set something up for cooler air to come in.. On the LSD did you change gears and install the diff or just install the diff? I'm looking to get some wider rims and stickier tires as well to add to the fun haha
I just needed new bearings and the lsd. I re used the gear ring and bolts. And the pinion I didn't even have to touch. I did a battery re locate but I put it in the box behind the cab. I also used a GM 1 Wire (LCEngineering) alternator. So I ran a thick welding cable (the stuff is cheaper than stereo wire) from the alternator to an inline 135amp fuse breaker and then to the battery + post. Then I grounded the battery - post right on the frame near where it is mounted. Then I ran another thick welding cable back to the engine bay where it went into a fused junction box. Off that junction box I ran my starter wire and a wire to the power for my fuse box under the hood. That's basically how to do it. I also have compressors in the back I had to hook up to the battery. And I used some more of that thick welding cable on the engine ground to the frame.
Thanks for all the input guys.. What kind of exhaust/muffler are you guys running? I don't want anything too loud an I sure dont want it sounding like a ticked off bumble bee.. Something fairly deep sounding and low.. Any suggestions?
First off ,what do you have a automatic or stick? Second ,seems no one knows what they are talking about! I've been a hot rodding for a long --------------time, & the heart to any 4 stoke engine is the cam! Period! Next would be making it breather better than stock= better air filter, better air intake, better exhaust ,bigger valves, bigger bore, etc. A stick will in most causes out perform a automatic. In less it's a factory ride!!!! I have a 22RE , LC Pro Street EFI ! This is a 140 mph truck, will pull hard from any range! Still can get 28 to 31 mpg! Any one that says you can not get performance from these 22re's ,just does not know what they are saying! I drive my truck hard & fast most of the time ,& around town, to shows hundreds of miles @ a time! Fun to drive ,& reliable! My last ride was a E-250 Ford van with a 460 cu in engine ,not stock for long & with 600 hp/5.2 mpg around town--the 22RE I have is just as much fun ,if not more! Mini Trucks are way better!
It's a 5 speed.. How hard is the cam to install? I'm wanting bolt on performance mods I can do in my garage.. Not really trying to rebuild the whole motor and turn it into a drag truck ha.. Just wann make it more fun to drive.. When I get something else to drive everyday I Plan on a motor swap of some kind but not now
If you have worked on engines before you can do this. I recommend LC,a little more than some of the others, but they are the beat when it comes to Toyota's! Cam,headers & a K&N filter will make a difference you will notice! All of which you should be able to do!
Thanks for the help.. I'll get some pics posted soon o the progress.. Any particular cam work better with my future setup or is it pretty much all the same?
cams.. yes, how'd i forget about those... well, we have one cam xD I run a Magnaflow oval body that goes from offset inlet to offset outlet. Open your exhaust to no bigger than 2.25" or 2-1/4". This will free up the flow and still keep the back pressure we NEED to provide the torque. You can retain your cat, it's recommended. I gutted mine and regret it quite a bit. should've left it in there... if you don't have emissions laws, you can get a high flow cat... but i'd probably just leave it in there or get a test pipe. My magnaflow provides a pretty good deep tone as i drive around town. It only gets raspy if you rev it in neutral all the way to redline. aside from that, when i get on it, i've gotten comments from all friends that it sounds pretty good. oh yeah, and add a resonator to clean up the notes! There's also a mk 3 supra VAFM you can rig up to use on our trucks to provide extra air flow, i'm unsure what year.
This... I'm wondering, truck action... What cam are you running and what's the engine management? (ecu)
I was in autozone today and noticed they have an intake tube for sale.. If I was to buy this and a k&n cone filter to use as an intake how would I do it without the air meter or whatever the electronic thing on the end othe tube is called? Or is this even possible?
Before I changed out the whole engine, when I blew a head gasket . I went with LC's street cam ,headers , & valve springs. Noticeable difference! The Pro Street EFI ( street legal,& passes smog), uses the same cam. The bore is from stock 82mm to 92mm, & can use the stock injectors( biggest bore that can). I went with their next up in injectors & the stock ECU works just fine! As per LC's advice I run a fuel ratio meter to monitor the mix, & did the adjustment to the air flow meter as per them ( richen up a tad)! Hope this is of some help! LC's tech people can & will give you any advice you need , custom or not!
seems like thats alot of money to get 50hp or so... seems like doing some exhaust and intake is the bet for someone wanting a little pep..... more than that do a motor swap. turbo, or supercharge to get some big numbers
