i bought i 01/95 toyota pick up a few weeks ago for my first truck and i seem to be having a few problems...it has 155k on the clock and its a 22re 5 speed. 1. start off with inspection.. failed twice for emission. i live in jersey where the co levels need to be 1.2 and mine had 1.8.. im thinking new spark plugs air filter and some other minor things.. any ideas? 2. sometimes when im shifting into 2nd and 3rd it feels very sluggish but then the ppower kicks in suddenly. not really sure about this one. maybe too high of rpms for it? any ideas? 3. when i bought it the oil was just changed.. and when i start it up it has a little tap to it but goes away after 3 seconds. i think it was changed with something like 5w30 maybe, with 155k should i be using a thicker oil? 4. and finally.. i plan on changing fluids and minor parts. i was thinking about changing the tranny fluid, adding more clutch fluid causes its kind of low, and bleeding slave cyl, maybe a fuel filter and engine oil with thicker oil. any thoughts? thanks for the replies!
So you still need to get it to pass? You should get what you need to pass first before bothering with other stuff. I wish I knew how to lower emissions.... You sure you have everything on the truck like the charcoal canister?
Ok the tapping, is it in the upper or lower half of the engine? My experience when you hear a slight knocking when you first start the truck is your bearings are going out but it could be other things also like timing chain slapping or tapits. And for your sluggish 2nd and 3rd gears it could be that you timing needs to be adjusted. or your clutch disc is gong out. might just need to adjust your distributer a little.
Use the right oil, 10W-30. Mobil1 synthetic will help you. My truck's been on synthetic for a long time (thanks to my dad) and I've switched to Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 because it performs better. Don't use 5w-30, I did... during winter also... and man, that was just bad for the truck. Went back to 10w-30 ASAP and the seriously feels MUCH better. The truck is designed for 10w-30, trust me on this. as for filters, use Bosch, Toyota, Purolator PUREONE. The Purolator and the Toyota ones will be the best, the Bosch has been good too. With this setup, you're good for 3-4/5k oil change intervals, depending on your driving. upon start up, I let the truck idle for a bit to let her stretch out before driving. (kinda like when someone wakes you up, would you rather get 30 seconds to stretch or get kicked and forced to sprint?) The 22R/RE's take exactly 4.5qts of oil with the filter change, it will read full. Hand tighten, these things are bitchy when it comes to sticking your arms around the intake manifold on a 2wd with a stuck filter (lol i know from experience) Spark plugs, use NGK Denso (your choice of whichever quality plugs they provide, I chose the V-Power plugs because they were same price as the "regulars"). Spark plug wires, the Toyota or NGK (same stuff?) should get you far. I need a new set some time... The original ones on your truck should be fine, you only have 155k miles, unless someone let it melt... You won't need a new fuel filter, you only have a bone stock 22RE correct? So do I. I'm at 187k and the truck won't need one any time soon unless you were running a firebreathing 475hp 22RE (we wish, right?) it wouldn't hurt to change one unless the fuel tank is *that* bad. if the timing is untouched, I would leave it alone. if it has been, it wouldn't hurt to set it back to factory. You should open up the valve cover and check and adjust valve lash as necessary. While you're at this, you have a PERFECT oppurtunity to peer down the chain gear passage with a flash like to check if the timing chain guide on the driver's side is broken or not. 155k miles, around 14x,xxx miles, I did a timing chain. Has your truck ever had it's timing chain replaced? If the guide's broken, you can be minutes or weeks away from the chain eating through the aluminum and into the water pump. Water spilling into oil = damaged block... BAD. and plus, the slack in the chain will cause variation in the cam timing, which could result in bad running = bad emissions! as for the running sluggish and kicking in, what RPM's is this? Injector cleaner wouldn't hurt to clean up those injectors! 22RE's were 112/6hp @ 4600RPM and 145lb/ft @ 3400RPM from the factory, at the crank. This will just give you a good idea of how the engine is. of course, driving around daily, you don't need to shift so high, this just gives a good relative idea. I don't know of any dyno graphs from the factory (i wish i had one..) and the tapping sound you hear. Hopefully it's not the timing chain, but since you said it might've have 5W-30, upon the first few seconds of start up, low oil will take a bit more time to build up pressure and reach the valves. our trucks are quite loud. You can hear injectors and valves going off, but not loud that it doesn't sound normal. I know 5w-30 is bad because it's too thin for our motors. It'll shear faster than the 10w-30 that the 22re's are designed for. 5W-30 will burn through faster, means lower oil levels in the time frame. Inspect the intake pipe from the airbox/VaneAirFlowMeter to the Throttle body. There should be no leaks of any type. Any leaks means the metered air is incorrect and causes the engine to run cruddy... that's the best information that I can provide for now!
thanks for the responses guys! well i passed inspection the other day. i changed the clogged filter and did alittle bit of throttle body cleaner. runs good now but still have problem with the gears.. i beleive it might be the clutch but i dont want to go replacing anything till its broke and know exactly what the problem is. i checked the spark plugs and they looked to be burning right and the wires look to be ngk. so im going to leave them alone... yes it is a bone stock 22re and im unsure of the rpms when it feels sluggish. i dont have a tach but its right when i let off the clutch when its in 2nd. i want to say 2500 but im not sure. but if i keep my foot in it the power kicks in hard around 3500 i want to say. unsure of when last timing chain was so might be getting around to that soon.
