1981 22r ALL BRAND NEW thermostat, radiator, cap, fan clutch, water pump. Toyota red coolant 50/50 with distilled water. Burped the system, still running 3/4 up on temp gauge. Not "hot" but warmer than I like. WTF am I missing here? :brickknock:
Thoughts, suggestions? And I have searched, high and low.
I am to the point I think it may be a bad new thermostat, I did not check it before install. I also believe it is in correct, spring down?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thermostat

Yeah first check your sensor. Try it with the thermostat off. Look into the radiator cap while its on and make sure that water is moving.I have no thermostat on mine and it never gets above 1/4 but I live on a tropical island and dont have to deal with the cold weather. as long as its not freezing over there you can run without it. Maybe the water pockets on your block are clogged with calcium buildup. I've worked on blocks that had some serious build up from hard water.

Make sure the radiator cap is sealing properly. You can do compression tests to find leaks.

Sounds like a gauge problem... Do you have sufficient grounds? I had a similar problem but with a honda...
does the temp go up and down as you drive it? or does it move up or down rather quickly?...

Gauge moves gradual on warm up and once it reaches temp it stays their. To me it does not look like it is flowing through the radiator, but never runs over about 3/4 up the gauge. I have to climb some 9% grades out here and you would think if their was real issues I would be running hot. I have a temp sensor coming today, will install and know more tonight. Thanks for the help so far!

Yeah, if your missing the obvious signs like oil in coolant, coolant in oil, cool spot on radiator, and no flow, Id check the temp sensor. When I had to swap the head on my 22r (warped) the sensor on the donor engine read at 3/4 instead of the 1/4 of the old one, so I just swapped the old sensor back in and its happy as a clam. Make sure you look for cool spots on the radiator though too, that one evaded me for a while and killed my head.

These engines are prone to head gasket problems.
Go to any shop & have them read hydro carbons @ the radiator,if present it's that! And if so have the head checked & resurfaced if needed!

    Thermostat

He said brand new everything. I dont think his radiator is leaking. even when its warmed up and thermo. should be open you dont see the water moving? You should see it moving.Take out the thermostat and try it.

Removed the thermostat, stayed below 1/4 on the gauge. Climbed a 9% grade got up to 1/2. On the way back down cooled back down to below a 1/4.

    9% grade?

How does the flow look through the radiator. Should be moving pretty quick.I'm still concerned though because 1/2 is ok but..When you say 9% grade is that like a huge long hill. How many minutes does it take you from the bottom to the top just so I can get an Idea of this 9% grade?

Hill is not long but very steep, 5 to 8 minutes. I have been driving it around, it is staying below 1/4 most of the time.

    testing for blown head gasket.

You can test your head gasket by running it with the radiator cap of and reving it. If water shoots out of the radiator cap hole then you got a bad head gasket.Back pressure.

If it was a head gasket wouldn't it have other tell tell signs, ie oil in water, water in oil, white smoke, loss of coolant? one or more of the above?
