i have a 1986 pickup with a 22R, i want to fix up my truck and obviously make more power since the motor is kind of a ***** no offence to anyone who likes the stock motor, but i was reading the wikipedia info on the 22R and i found this... "However, its weakness is high-end power. The 22R has a large displacement and a strong block, but its comparatively long stroke limits its use in high revving applications. Thus, the Toyota 18R-G, 2T-G, 4A-GE and 3S-GE 4-cylinder engines are better suited for performance applications. These engines are extremely well known for their durability, decent fuel efficiency and good low to mid range torque. A popular modification to the 22R is to use a 20R head. This has a smaller combustion chamber, giving a higher compression ratio which then allows more power to be developed. This is a simple bolt-on modification for the early, pre 1985, block.[10] For the later, 1985 onwards, 22R block, further modifications are required.[11]" and this... "one can consider the 85-95 22R-E as a fuel injected version of the 85-90 22R with only minor differences, if any." so my question i guess is, could you just make the 22R fuel injected then turbo it? or what about swapping the head for a 20R head then fuel injecting it and boosting it? i don't know a whole lot about this stuff as im just starting to get in it, but any help would be awesome, thanks also i want to be as cost effective as possible since i dont have a whole lot of cash
Well first off you could make sure that your current engine is fully functioning (as in no issues). I am always happy with my 22REs when they have no issues, no leaks, good gaskets and all. If you want to go turbo it is always recommended that you fully rebuild your engine. Like new bearings and new head gasket and ARP head studs/bolts. The newer 2RZ is super awesome for going turbo. I've seen a lot of **** about the 2RZ but I don't know much about it, I can look it up I guess, but I want something that will be easy to swap in and cheap, I looked online and found a 22RE block I believe for like 300, but it would need all new internals and stuff so I wouldn't so much mind rebuilding the whole engine, plus it would give me a chance to learn more And turbo is a big thing for me, idk why but I want a turbo something super bad its between the 86 pickup or the 06 balt, this just seems cheaper
if your going for big numbers you would be better off throwing a boosted 2rz or a 2jz in it theres a place about 2 miles from my house that builds standalone wiring harnesses for 2rz's for like 400-550 if u have a 22re it is easyer
I have all the parts for a 22re... asking 150 picked up ... otherwise boosting the 22r/e is pointless... go with a V8 like I am or 2jzgte or of the various other engines.
the 2jz is my dream but the cash isnt there for it, im just looking for a cheap way for maybe 300whp at least?
small block v8 then, carb is typically cheaper.. if you can find a 5.0 Ford or a 5.7GM ...or whatever the dodge boys have... after initial cost powersteering adapter is like $30 (factory powersteering still) engine mounts can be had for under $100... custom trans mount, exhaust, and driveshaft, and you're moving down the road with typically no less than 250hp Edit: if you own a welder all of the custom minus the driveshaft is basically free.
For the GM's its distributor and block hugger header fittment is the tight spot. For the Fords its the oil pan direction. otherwise yes the truck has the room.
i just read your project and its pretty sick, but i am nowhere as mechanically inclined as you and it seems like your project would cost close to the same as swapping a 2jz in?
Ha, it takes somewhere around 2 thousand bucks to make a 5.0 mustang go from 200 to 300 wheel hp. (with a head/cam intake swap). Its an expensive hobby bro. Just keep it simple man.
true, i just assume to stick with toyota stuff instead of american muscle, it would probably swap better that way though?
Yeah my engine alone is worth at least 4 grand... I just got done spending about 400 on the carb.. all told though I should be putting down 500-600hp. Are you good with wiring (cause I hate automotive wiring with a passion) yes = go for something jap (jdmhookup.com run by Dewey is local to me and backs everything he sells.) no or don't want to deal with wiring go for a carb'd something as its 5 wires to start and run. Better is relative to what you want or can do. also with the turbo you tune with electronics primarily so you need a tuner also if you're doing anything much past factory.... only tuning my engine will have is 5 screws on the carb (4 corner fuel and 1 idle setting) and the setting the timing on the distrib.
good advice, ive honestly not done much of anything car related so i need to just start small, but the savings is what im worried about really, i just want to know what/how much to be saving for, thats why im trying to get a long term plan down
Yea having a plan and budget helps big time. I heard one person say, when planning for a budget, to estimate the total cost and then double that number. Then you will have enough.
^^^That is always the case, TRUST ME!! I'd definitely think of an engine swap if you wanna go turbo. 2rz is an excellent base for turbocharging. Register at customtacos and you will learn a hell of a lot of info about those motors and what it takes to get them turbo'd. You'd be spending way to much money to turbo a 22r with minor improvements in hp/tq. Set up a budget as previously stated and do lots of research and parts sourcing. Learn as much as you can before starting a project. The thing that I see most common on all automotive forums across the internet is people wanting to do all these fantastic things to their cars and not realizing what it really takes to get them done.
seeing as my 22R just kicked the bucket today actually what would you suggest to be the easiest/cheapest/most powerful swap to do?
Seriously hunt ebay or craigslist get a used v8, order the mounts, and drive shaft, and have a serious roller on your hands. This truck weighs in around 2300 which is about half of what the majority of the v8 stuffed vehicles are.
It is totally up to you and your engine building/fabrication skills for a project to be easy. Almost all requirements for a swap is the same. Engine mounts, transmission swap or bell housing mods, tranny tunnel mods, transmission mount mods, drive shaft shortening or lengthening, swapped rear end to deal with more power (usually), and bigger breaks to name a few. If you feel confident you can do the above or have enough cabbage to pay someone to do it, then dive right in. Your cheapest swap will probably be an American V6 or V8 being that their are engine mounts, bell housings, and aftermarket products already available. Some of the popular swaps would be the Buick 231 V6, Chevy 4.3 V6, Chevy SB V8. Don't know about Ford engines. Most powerful swap would probably be the SB V8 or the 1uzfe. If I was doing the swap, I would go 1uz only because i'm a Toyota purist and also because they do well with boost. Although anytime you choose a Toyota engine over an American made engine you will be paying a lot more money...usually. Like I said before; do a lot of parts researching, sourcing, and pricing so you can get a ball-park figure then ask yourself if it's worth it.
