realistically...... v8 swaps are getting cheap. power wise, you cant really beat it either. for the average cost of buying or rebuilding a stock toyota motor with a few modifications here or there, you place yourself in the budget area of a v8 swap but start off with double the hp and near triple the torque with most of the original mpg in tact. just some food for thought. im looking to do the same right now and i can realistically see the motor, trans, and essentials budget near 800 dollars. so i say thats within your targeted budget.
800 isnt bad..how much modification is required to squeeze one of those in there? and would it pass CA smog emission?
I doubt it would pass CA emIssions. Unless you put all the smog stuff back on an you would have to get it ref'd still.
Cheat the system and register it in OR if you can! LOL I am Military so I dont have to cheat the system but i know it would suck if I had to smog my truck with the 2JZ.
if you choose to "smog" a swapped motor, usually a smog test costs about 200 or so depending on who you know. although as mentioned, its not all too hard to get it to be BAR'd if you place all of the original smog equipment on to the truck. ive been looking at most domestic v8's and depending on what year model v8 you swap in, the emissions are actually not very hard on domestic vehicles. mainly evap hoses to canisters, egr, cat, O2's, and possibly a smog pump if it was equipped with one.... go look at a junk yard or two and look about different vehicles with possible v8 candidates. im coming to find a smog legal v8 swap is not all too hard to do.
I'm doing a 5.0 swap in my 84. Its extremely simple. Northwest off road has the motor mounts and makin a trans cross member is very easy at that point its all just about getting parts for that engine.....only problem I'm runnin into is makin headers. Btw anyonewho has done a v8 swap what have u done for headers.
when my buddy gets back from offshore in 9 days were gonna really start getting mine going... I doing the 1uz-fe lexus motor because personally I wanted to keep it toyota and keep it fuel inj like it was.... Im going for the looks stock style swap, I just dont like looking under there and seeing a old carbed motor out and it being from a total different motor company... I guess I'm just that partial to the toyota company vs all the others
I prefer to stick with Toyota too. There's no denying that Toyota motors can make power. How about a 2RZ or 3RZ?
i was debating on 7mge or j2z if I was gonna do and kind of inline 6... lot more power options with turbo's
Too my knowledge you can not do a engine swap in Ca. , especially in the Bay Area! In less the vehicle is over 25 years old or older! They will pull up what engine came in the truck, than fail it!
Lots of info out there with a few searches... I've spent less than 100 so far on actual conversion parts. I have headers/exhaust driveshaft and radiator left to figure out and all that is waiting till I can get the new engine in. BTW I'm getting my parts from Jegs/Summit racing.
