Does it sound salvageable? The motor has 280,000 miles, no leak, no smokes. Previous owner replaced oil pan gasket and just regular tune up and oil changed. I'm just doing research and taking advices now before I work on the truck this weekend. Thanks. YouTube - 20R knocking‏
Thanks for the input IBeSeen. When the previous owner took the truck in for an oil pan gasket replacement the mechanic did tell him that it would need valves adjustment, but he never had it done. The knocking started when he took the truck on the Interstate. The previous didn't know anything about car or truck at all. Hopefully all that knocking won't damage anything internally. Crossing my fingers for now.
.007" intake and .011" exhaust. The valves are easy to adjust, get a set of decent quality feeler gauges and do a quick google search on the procedure and you'll be golden.
Thanks for the information Mr. White. I can't wait until Sunday to work on the truck, my only day off. .
Its easy to do, I rotate the engine till each lobe is pointing directly away from the rocker arm and try sticking the feeler gauge in directly between the adjuster screw and valve stem. If it won't go by pushing on the end of the gauge they are too tight. If you can wiggle it back and forth, remove it and stick it back in then it is set correctly.
i always like using a set of go-nogo feeler gauges for doing valve adjustments takes all the guess work out of it lol they even make a special tool for adjusting the jam nuts but u don't need it 14mm wrench and a flat head screw driver, one thing is don't over tighten the valve cover nuts or the rocker arms can make contact with the valve cover and make a ticking noise
Even a go-no-go wire type feeler gauge can be shoved through an overly tight valve adjustment. Hence I always recommend standard feeler gauges. They give a spot on "feel" to know when you are set correctly.
The video is fine but not like being there in person, at least for me, but have you checked around and under the heat shield for a cracked or badly leaking exhaust manifold? towards the end of the vid it just has a different sort of sound to it.
Update, adjusted the valves, engine got quite, but still knocking from sprung bearings 3 and 4. Knocking when give gas. Time to rebuild the bottom. Thanks everyone for the helps. Time to hit the local yards for a spare block to rebuild.
