im new to this site and to the 22re motor. my problem; when driving at a certain rpm my truck seems to lag and then come to life. if i hold the gas pedal steady it will slowly get itself out of the lag mode, but if i give it a little more gas its seems to struggle then go back to normal. im thinking its the timing chain guide... also it takes awhile to start sometimes, like if i drive somewhere shut it off then get back in an try to start it. it'll just keep cranking for like 3 trys then it'll start. but when i start it in the morning after it has been sitting all night it starts first try... any idea's? it has 170,000 miles
I doubt the timing chain guide has any bearing on the problem, sounds to me more like a fuel issue, pressure regulator possibly? starts easy when cold because you have the aid of the cold start injector, but once warm it doesn't.
It is probably something to do with the fuel system. could be a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, or a bad or dirty sensor. Check sensors first then work your way from cheapest to most expensive.
Sounds like ignition timing. Is your engine light on? Ask yourself when was the last service and pick it up from there. I'm guessing it could be your cam timing if someone had mess with it or just simply your ignition timing that needs to be adjusted. Check all plugs, wires, cap, rotor for any obvious signs of wear and tear. It'll be alot better to check your timing with a timing light. Jump the connection in the little jump box on your left side facing towards the motor when the hood is open according to the manual. After that check your timing win a timing light and it should be at 5 degrees Before top dead center. Good luck!
i went to try and barrow a timming light from a local auto parts store and they didnt have one. the guy told me to check the tps sensor. do you guys think that could be the problem? and how would i check something like that?
ok so i checked the timing and its spot on. its still struggles a tiny bit when its cold but not when its warmed up. anymore ideas?
Did you check the TPS or fuel filter? Or anything else the guys on this forum recommended? Or did you only check the timing?
check your spark thats really easy to do all you need is a screwdriver and a buddy. take one plug wire off the spark plug use a rubber handled screw driver put it in the boot of the wire and hold it about an inch from the manifold if you see a blue ark when its cranking you know its good. also check your plugs for build up or corrosion.
timing only. is there anyway to check the fuel filter or does that mean just buy a new one? and how do you check the tps? i was going to replace the spark plugs and wires because everything on the truck is original.
I agree its gotta be the plugs and wires. Just like lowfat said it felt like the truck would bog down under heavy throttle but when babying the pedal it drove normal This happened to my truck and to fix it I replaced the Distributer Cap+Rotor, Plugs and Wires, Cost less than $100 bucks and takes no more than 30 mins to install.
