So, I have an interesting dilemma. I have two complete drivetrains and want to build one very good one, and then possibly build the other as a backup for the future, but I can't decide which to do first. Here is what I am working with: 1981 22R engine (they only made it for a year and a half.) I already built this one with modified ignition, TRD cam, modified carb and all. This has been sitting for 11 years in a garage, and needs a complete overhaul. 1994 22RE engine that is pretty much stock and has 350,000 miles on it. Still runs like a champ, but is screaming for a rebuild (timing chain and valve noise.) Part of me says the simplicity and the durability of the 1981 is the way to go, but I think I can do SO much more with the RE. I also have an 1989 4 speed and a 1994 5 speed. The 5 speed feels like I am throwing a hotdog down a hallway when I am running through the gears... not to mention I think its too many shifts for racing off the line, so I am pretty sure I am going with the 4 speed. It's not about not being able to work with FI, or not being able to tune a carb right. I can do both quite well, I just don't know which way I would be happier with the end result. I am leaning more on the 22RE with the 4 speed, and building the 22R and putting it on ice until this one blows. But, what do y'all think?
The 22RE block should hold up better in hi-rpms because of the lighter piston. But the 22R (with a 20R head) has the superior headflow. But if you want real power, boost or find another motor
I am just north of USF. I just bought it recently, but have been working on it non-stop. Just put the chrome front end on and working on the suspension now. Going to upload a pic of the new truck now. I am really considering the 22R option. Now, just to find a 20R head.
