alright guys i did it, bought a 8.8 off a buddy for $50. has axles n full brake setup but needs the guts. i have plans for a 1jzgte this year so whats a good gear ratio to run?
3.73. Remember, (assuming you have an explorer axle) that they are 31 spline. Easily confused for fox body mustang 28 spline. Get a LSD differential. Add an extra clutch friction, and Enjoy your semi-spool!
Yup. LSD and 3.73's. Great balance. Also remember when you go turbo, you want to stay in boost longer to utilize all of the torque. So 3.73 is good. I had 3.73's in my 7.5" and they did a good job of balancing top end and acceleration (even though it wasn't much). Are the explorer axles similar to the Mustangs? I was going to suggest you to grab a t-lok (traction lock) from a GT.
it is from a foxbody, can i use the pumpkin cover off a explorer? the origonal had 2.?? gears so its to flat to fit 373's
what do you mean. you mean you want lower gears like 3:73 or even 3:56 or higher gears like 4:11 to stay in boost?
Let's take a look at a Honda perspective. My friend has an 06 RSX Type S. He's pretty much done alot of things to his car. All of the suspension he needs, not too much motor, clutch, and exterior wise, the car is clean. Lip and lip spoiler. He was considering going turbo since it is efficient and powerful. BUT have you seen a turbo FWD honda go? just wheelspin. No one makes a longer/ taller gear ratio for the K-series. You also want to stay in gear longer so you can use every bit of power the turbo is pushing out. It's just better that way. Most turbo honda's go through their gears too quickly. not enough top end. Depending on how much your car puts out and what transmission it is hooked up to, 3.73's or 3.56's will help keep the vehicle drivable and keep the mileage, happy. Kinda confusing. lol
bwuahaha that'd be perfect. Honda's have really really really really close ratios. Toyota's are different. Sooo 3.73's or 3.56's.
Brian (TRfknD) was having gearing problems with his Taco. His motor made too much power for the trans to be effecent. 4:1 first gear... I own a mustang, it had a worn out 2.73 LSD. I pulled it out, put a new ford racing gearset, rebuilt the trac-loc, and new bearings. 4.10 ratio. Took me 2 hrs. Diff cover had no issues. Do 3.73. Rebuild it and enjoy it.
good info , still no answer tho. can i use a explorer rear end pumpkin cover or any parts for that matter in my fox 8.8?
Oh, You can swap diff covers no problem. Its universal and they dont "interfere' with the gears. (I had a feeling you were wondering. A higher number gear ratio is actually physically smaller than say a 2.73.). You can use the ring and pinion, bearings, pinion flange, and seals. But you CANNOT use the axles or differential carrier/posi unit. (unless you use custom axles). Brakes wont bolt up either.
thanks man, im in no rush to get the axle done right now, still have to get the main swap started. thats deff goin to help when i need parts for it for cheap. ill be starting a build thread real soon
Yup, Oly is on point! Hopefully with w58 trans Oly picked up for me will match with my hopefully 400hp capable 2rz boosted setup and my srunner axle! Can't wait!
I'll just have to redo that some other time. Let's think about it. High hp plus short gears = use all the power early and have nothing else for later.
