i'm having issues getting my 80 20r to run right. i cleaned out the fuel tank, replaced fuel filter and pump, and have cleaned out the carb. does anyone have any tips or tricks on how to tune the carburetor? any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Carb

Is it a stock carb? What are the symptoms?

yes, it is the stock carb. sometimes it will run fine, and then it will just start dumping black smoke out the exhaust and it seems like it's running super rich and won't idle unless i pump the pedal.

Rule of thumb when adjusting your carburetor is backing thel adjustment screw all the way until it seats and then go 2 1/2 turn. Start your engine and tune from there. If it still idle rough slighty open up your mixture screw until the engine just barley running smooth. If it starts running rough again your too far off and would run rich. NOTE: Alot of time 90% of the problems with idle and running rough deals with your ignition timing!

i pulled the mixture screw all the way out and noticed a small ridge towards the finest point of it. is that correct or am i going to have to replace it?

If it has a ridge worn around the fine tip, thats not the seat, seats in the carb, the needle has the ridge worn in it from being over tightened, and should be replaced.

alright, i adjusted the carb as per earlier directions and it seems to be running pretty smoothlt now. i pulled out #1 & #2 plugs which i just replaced and they were pretty black. i sanded them back clean and put them back in and that seemed to help also. thanks guys, i really appreciate it :)
