Wanted to know if anyone had ever seen an earlier hilux get a 80's model front suspensions. I know that there will be some modifications needed. But my question is were the frames themselves actually modified. Do they have the same kick up from under the cab on the frame through the years.

what is your goal? in my opinion, the 78 and back frames are a better starting point. the 79-83s can be modified to use the 84-95 parts. which have larger brakes and drop spindles available. but the older coil spring frames have some benefits such as a huuuuge crossmember (drag proof, and able to withstand manhole hits) as well as the steering linkage behind the crossmember. it also has a triangulated lower arm so there isnt a strut bar. but it doesnt have very large brakes. and they get more camber as you get low. im really low and have very noticable camber.

I wonder if there are any brakes that can be made to work... like 4runner brakes, I think I found some 76 brake parts Im going to try to get hopefully, im still allwheel drum:D, then I can start looking at stuff, Im going to school for machining and will get my degree this year so if it just need simple brackets I can try to make some. I want to go to the 8.8 rear end and try to find some brakes for the front that will make it look better than having small disc in the front and huge explorer dics in the back.

With a grinder and handrill you can mount ALOT of rotors onto a Lux's hub.
I kid you not I was going to mount some rather "large" rotors on some hubs today, but did bodywork instead.

    Too off topic :D

I actually wish I had a regular lower control arm in the 3 point fashon. Strut rod bushings can only take so much force, even poly ones.

+1 on whats your goal? What are you trying to achive?

i did some more research. You can install 75 - 78 brakes and theres my disk brakes. Yay. I also talked to twisted mini and he said he could make me a set of lower and upper control arms. i wanna bag it. But i wanna daily driven bag truck. Im a huge fan of simple which is why i got this truck. I mean damn i toke the entire dash apart with a 10mm and a philips. does anyone have a pic of a front end from this year thats bagged so i can get an idea. I looked at a buddies chevy and it looks like he just has the oversized version of what i do.

    Absolutely agree.

For $500 I picked up a 147k 77' and will be swapping over all it's guts n glory over to my 72'.

After taking some measurements, the front clip would pretty much be a bolt-on upgrade. Disc brakes, newer suspension and steering components...

Im heading to the junkyard tomorrow. There listing shows two in stock no telling what condition they are in. I need to get a front end on this truck really really bad. Its the only thing keeping me from driving it right now. Parts are just so hard to come by.

the supra ball joints are about 200% bigger shafts but i cant use the supra ball joints so im working on finding the right sized ones that are bolt in style and not pressed in.

if you want more details read my wagon build up.

so for my 72. would it be possible to take the front clip out of say.. i dunno a 1984 pickup and bolt it into my 72? Cuz the pre-80's stuff is kinda hard to find in my area.

Trucks up to 78 had the coil spring frames. Of those, 75-78 had discs. I prefer that frame to the torsion bar trucks of 79-95. From what I can tell, that is your main goal. Read toydatto's build. He bagged his and it was basically stock parts with an RE-5 bag. I may do the same to my 78.

no they wont just swap over. you can modify the front frame of a 84-95 to fit, but it's a lot of work.
