Will a 5 speed transmission from a 1988 toyota pickup be a direct replacement for a 5 speed transmission from a 1983 toyota pickup? does it depend 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive?

 

I had to replace my 83's 5 spd tranny 2 weeks after i got it. I dont think that the 88s is a direct bolt up though, because i remember having to find one damn near from that exact year i think. And 4x4 wont work in 2wd either, im almost 100% positive.
