Ok i've looked and looked, but haven't found exactly what I'm looking for. I want to put a mustang rear end in my 85 pickup so I will never have any worries about the power breaking it. Would a fully built 22r screw up the rear end? Probably not, but safer than sorry and one day I might drop a V8 in it. So anyways what year models am I looking for with the disc breaks and what has to be done to make it fit? I saw something about shortening it to be the same length as the yota rear end, but that was all it said. If someone has a thread link or feels like explaining exactly what I have to do I would be greatful!
Check my build thread, I'm putting a mustang gt 8.8 rear end in my Toyota, but not exactly done yet, but i do have pics. I'm about 90% sure these specs are correct but I'm not sure, so double check. I want to say the stock rear end (Toyota) from outer hub to outer hub is about 57", i "think" the fox body mustang 8.8 rear end is 57"ish from outer to outer as well. I got a rear end from a 94-98 GT, they are about 59" from outer to outer, and have disc brakes. I was measuring last night with the rear end under the truck, and with stock Toyota steelies bolted up i measured from outside of tire to outside of tire about 66" IIRC. Then measured the well's of my 4wd bed, which isn't on yet, and its gonna be very close, i may have to put my 19" wheels on the back before i can put the bed on, because they have a higher positive offset, and will allow the wheels to sink it maybe just enough to tuck them. I am really hoping i do not have to shorten the axle tubes and axles, but i may have to, not sure yet.
Several people have put a ford 9 inch in the back of their trucks ... search that option ... although I think many use the explorer version.
Ok I have searched and searched and searched and found one really good thread, but that's it! Can someone please post pictures/link to an 85 2X4 pickup that has had this done? I want to see where the tires sit after the swap is done! Also anyone in the south know who might possibly be able to shorten the housing/axle to 57" if it's too far out?
9" is too heavy for these trucks, too much unsprung weight and its unlikely you will ever have enough power to really need a 9" axle. An 8" Ford axle is much lighter and plenty strong with nothing done to it. Technically the Toyota axles too. I know a guy running a Toyota V6 axle with over 400 HP in front of it. Fox body SVOs came with factory disc brakes. IDK about the rest, but I assume SVO parts would bolt to another fox body axle.
id keep the stock rearend, its a 3rd member and pretty much i mini asian version of the ford 9, if i was you id stick with stock. Plus toyota rears are way more common and accesible.
I'm picking up another project truck next weekend. 91 2x standard cab chassis and I'm picking up a 89 x cab 4x with bad frame damage. Anyway the point is I've got a spare 78 8" rear axle that will MORE than hold up to whatever a street driven yota can put to it V8 included and it is 53" wide so with a 4x bed I'll be able to run standard offset 8-10" wide wheels and fatty rear tires. If I remember right what we 4x guys call a "0" gen (74-78) has a 53" wide rear. 79-85 is 55" wide and 86-95 are 58" wide.
unless your rear end is need of replacement, you would be better off putting that money towards your v8 swap, toyota makes a pretty stout rear end.
Fact. A V6 or 1 ton rear end with an 8" ring gear will handle most anything on the street. I've destroyed nearly 2 dozen 8" third members but those were all with 38" and larger tires on my old V8 truck. A light small tire won't put that kinda stress on it at all.
I think it was BYE or Raff that blew the stock rear end with a mildly built 22/20R hybird at the track, and it was with street tires too i believe.
I'm going with the 8.8 swap and when it's done will have costed me the same as the stock axle would have. The axle was swapped years ago with a 7.5" *we didn't know any better at the time* so I would have to find another 8" and rebuild, lsd, disc breaks, blah blah! The motor is the very last thing that will be done to this truck so in a year I might just slap a V8 in it and if I do well I won't have any worries about the rear axle holding up.
Anyone know if the shocks/bushings used on a toyota rear axle will work on the 8.8 axle? I'm still looking for a good thread where someone explained everything needed to make this work, but can't seem to find one! Issue with keeping the stock yota axle is the drum breaks!!!! I loathe working on them and the 8.8 explorer axle comes with disc and lsd from the factory so it's cheaper for me to go with one of those!
http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/suspension-chassis-40/ford-8-8-install-5308/ the shock bushings are the same. the shocks mount to the truck and the plate supporting the leaf springs. they dont mount to the RE like on the ford. You'll see how fun it is when you clutch kickit in the rain and drift through a large intersection.
I've already done that in my 85 actually! Wasn't on the gas much at all and the ass end came completely around on me.
