Whats up fellas? Been a while since I've been on here, but You guys always give some solid advice. So... getting to the point. I have a set of Hedman headers I wanna swap into my '83. Its got the 22R, and the bolts on the exhaust manifold look like they wont be very happy when i go to take em out. So my ? is if any of you have any XP on this matter, would ya mind givin a brother some tips as to how to go about this or things to expect or watch out for. I'm open to any and all suggestions. If you know of any links to stuff on this matter, that'd be awesome too. Cuz honestly, it looks like I'll end up having to drill and retap the lot of them. But I really... really... really want to avoid this if at all possible. I plan on getting this underway within the next couple of weeks once the weather breaks up here in good old Dirty Jerz. Thanks in advance!!!

Start soaking the bolts NOW with a good penetrating OIL not wd40 that crap evaporates. Something like aerokroil (google it) will break them loose without too much drama. The rust shouldn't have much affect on the studs into the head just the nuts to the studs. If the nuts are frozen hard the studs will just back out. Not a big deal, just go to the dealer or a GOOD bolt shop if you have one around you and get new studs.

Heating the nuts works great if you have a oxy/acetaline setup handy. Heck even a mapp/oxy torch will do it but propane by itself won't get it hot enough to really make a difference.

The dealer is guna want like $70+ for new studs. Get the studs from a 3VZ or 5VZ. Theyre a bit longer and have a star shaoe on the outside part so u can use a 7mm socket to get them in

Like said soak with a good penetrating oil,use a stud wrench to remove the studs, measure them & get new. Any good fastener supplier can supply you. I use Smith Fasteners for all my stainless fasteners, give them a call.
Use Anti Seize on all when goes back.

    Aerokroil is great.

LC Engineering sells a header stud kit for $18.

well i got all but one of em out today. and of course its the furthest one back on the bottom... fml... Theres a funky tube coming out the top of the manifold though which i assume must be for emmissions. seems to run around the back of the block up against the firewall and disapears any suggestions on what to do with it? seems like im gonna be pulling the motor out this weekend to figure it out

That's the EGR tube. it goes around to the EGR valve, which is on the back of the passengers side of the motor. If you want it out of the way, it comes off easily. Just unbolt it and it'll pop right off. If you have already removed some of your emissions, why not take this opportunity to get rid of it. LOL I filled the openings in the factory header with JB weld, then stuck pennies on top of them.
