Help with 79 4x4

    Hi guys I'm new here but I have a older toy that I'm looking to play with, I'm new to the whole truck deal. I have a 1979 Toyota 4x4 and was looking to put big 35s tires on it( sorry I know this is a lowered pickup site) just wonder if some of you guys can help me with switching the gears from a 4.10 to a 4.88. Do I need to buy gears from the front and back ? What do it need to change from stock to 4.88. Thanks guys

    Forgot to say I put a 22r engine from my other 1983 Toyota 4x4

    ok check it out, you need to know what is currently in both diffs because that can give you an idea of how your transfer case is designed. i am not too familiar with toyo 4x4 but i have done other vehicles. then you can figure out what ratios to run because your transfer case could have a bias meaning it spins one diff a little faster. again donno if toyos do this. if they do and your front ratio is like a 3.73 or something, just a number for ideas dont hold me to it, then you can go from there. seeing as you have 4.10 you might be able to get away with moving that gear set to the front to compensate for the new gear set you buy for your rear. see where this is going? HowStuffWorks "How Differentials Work" save myself some typing, check this out. also realize if you change the angles between the driveshaft and axle, ex: suspension lift, compensations need be made.

    Going to a 35" tire will definately need at least 4.88, even 5.29's, but they get a little weak because of pinion size and break easily if really hard core wheelin.
    To go to 88's you'll need 2 ring and pinion gear sets, one for the front, one for the rear, plus install kits, those consist of carrier bearings, pinion bearings, shims, crush sleeve, unless you opt to reuse the stock rigid sleeve, and assorted shims for setting pinion depth and preload. The rest is just time and labor pulling the old third members out, disassembly, assemble and setup, and reinstalling them.

    If you driving your truck daily and on the freeway i wouldnt do 5.29s. They going eat some gas.
    On the trail however,
    They some sick gears. Pretty low.

    And if you plan to use your 4wd then yeah you need to change front and rear gears.

    Yeah I need to change the gears, But little low on cash for the moment, well low on the cash to blow on the truck, oh well I'm going sell the 83 Toyota that I have, or part it out more like part t out since it's crap and copped up. I have the 20r engine from the 1979 that I'll sale, or just store all the good parts and recycle it the rest. Thanks guys for the info and hopefully I'll give you a up date soon on he out come

    ive got a 80 4x4 with 4.10's and the L43 4 speed

    got no problems what so ever turning 35's with a 20r, weber and header. ive even had it up to 80+mph. been wheeling the piss out of it for 7 or 8 years, when i did go from 33's to 35's (thanks F'n car theives) i did break birfields, but a set of 30 spline longfields fixed that weak link.




    keep the 4.10's unless your gonna go trailer queen. the lower gears make DD use annoying, lookin at a top speed of like 60 with 5.29's and a 5speed. imho, dual T cases are far superior to lower diff gears, even once ran into a guy with 3 T cases in some home brew buggy :eek:


    i just ordered from marlin crawler 2 fully assembled brand new 3rd members with 4.10's and a ARB. dual T cases is next.



    i say, put 33's on it, and drive the piss out of it. i did, with NO PROBLEMS for 5-6 years.



    here's my junk, stock height, trimmed rear fenders and beat in front inner fenders, 35x13.5 on 15x10 -30 wheels.

    my 83 has 4.88s and 32" tires and I drove it DD with no problems other than its gutless on hills BUT with that combo my speedometer was almost dead on and I can use 5th gear. Drove it from Boise, Id to La Pine, Or for camping and then from Boise down to Monterey, Ca. From all the reading Ive done Id go with the 5.29s and 35s. Go over and sign up on the Marlin Crawler forum and read up TONS of info there and go watch his Walking the Crawler vids on youtube if you want to see what more than 1 case and gears will do for your truck

    I don't want to make it a full on crawler since I want to drive it around town and to work a few times a week. I'll check out marlin and see what some of the guys will say.
